My personal experience with Adderall XR offers a unique perspective on its usefulness in combating deep depressive states.

My Experience with Adderall XR

I have been prescribed Adderall XR and dextroamphetamine for my depression. While dextroamphetamine is generally a milder form of the medication, it works better for me due to the gentler comedown and quicker relief from depressive episodes. I typically take it only about twice a month, and it has been a lifesaver in pulling me out of severe depressive states.

Amphetamines as an Alternative for Treatment-Resistant Depression

Amphetamines like Adderall can be prescribed as an alternative option if multiple antidepressants and augmenting medications have failed. My journey involved trying ten different antidepressants and one antipsychotic before finding Vyvanse and an Adderall XR booster. This combination, in conjunction with therapy, has worked incredibly well for me. However, it is not a standard treatment, and one must exhaust many other options before reaching this stage.

Avoiding obtaining amphetamines illegally is essential. The risks and side-effects are significant, and it is unwise to take such a trade-off when dealing with treatment-resistant depression.

Adderall as an Off-Label Treatment for Depression

Adderall can be prescribed off-label for cases of depression accompanied by excessive fatigue. In my case, I was prescribed Adderall after bupropion, a milder stimulant, stopped working. I found Adderall to be effective in combating the severe fatigue I experienced after stopping Lexapro, a medication I took for anxiety and depression. While the response to Adderall can vary from person to person, it is definitely worth considering as a potential treatment option. My psychiatrist warned of the tendency to increase the dosage, but in my experience, one 10mg pill a day was sufficient. The only notable side effects were an initial fidgety feeling, which disappeared after a few days, and reduced appetite, a common effect of amphetamine use.
