Admiring the Wisdom and Humor of Older Generations

As we grow older, we often gain a wealth of wisdom and experience that can greatly enrich our lives. The elderly are a unique group whose perspective is invaluable, not just for their age, but for the life experiences they've accumulated. They bring a depth of knowledge and a spectrum of humor that often surpasses the generic politeness and correctness that often characterizes younger generations.

The Source of Wisdom and Humor

Many older individuals are almost the same as they were in their younger years, unless they’ve faced significant hardships. The elderly bring a charm and length of time that has been 'tried and true' to friendship. Each older person is unique and has their own story to tell, making them a valuable asset to any community or social circle. Moreover, a dear friend remains just that, regardless of age or any personal trials, because what binds them is the foundation of their friendship.

Why the Elderly Are Valued

Most older people are repositories of life experiences. They've seen the world in a way that younger generations have not. This accumulation of life experiences can make older individuals more interesting, knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in others. For example, someone in their 70s might have had the chance to see epic musical performances like the Rolling Stones concert, which makes getting old a rewarding experience.

Freedom and Independence

With age comes a certain level of freedom that younger individuals crave but don't always achieve. Older people no longer have to deal with the strictures of authority figures, like managers, employers, and parents. Instead, they can choose to interact only with those who are 'cool' and who they respect or enjoy being around. This freedom often makes older individuals appear more attractive and desirable.

Personal Reflection and Growth

One’s personal journey with age reveals much about their character. I, at 77, have seen the epidemic of grumpiness, immobility, and the challenges of aging. It's important to stay active, both physically and mentally, to avoid becoming what you don't want to be. Regular exercise and mental engagement can maintain one’s vigor and outlook. Some of these challenges, like body odor, are out of personal control, but many can be managed through lifestyle choices.

I've found that having a mix of younger and older friends enriches my life. Younger individuals can offer fresh perspectives and ideas, while older individuals have a wealth of wisdom to share. It’s easy to get stuck in the 'organ recital' of life stories and complaints, but these can be draining. Instead, active listening and engaging in meaningful conversations can keep the spirit alive.

Life is a Path of Choices

The aging process is not solely about physical and mental decline; it's also about making choices that define who you are and how you want to live. Dr. Walter Bortz, a retired geriatric physician, famously said, 'Life is a fatal disease. Once contracted, there is no known cure.' However, the way we get old is largely under our control. We see people go on and not just age gracefully but retain a vibrant presence, and others who seem to age more quickly. This is not about age but about how we choose to live our lives.

Ultimately, the elderly can be a source of inspiration and a mirror reflecting the choices we all must make as we grow older. By embracing the wisdom and humor of older generations, we can enrich our lives and gain valuable insights into what it truly means to live a fulfilling, purposeful life.
