My journey to self-awareness was gradual. Growing up, I believed that everyone had the same emotional reactions as I did. My emotional volatility led to frequent isolation, as I struggled to form connections with others. I often felt that others didn’t like me and, in a vicious cycle, pushed them away, leading to further isolation.

Psychiatric hospitalizations did not immediately change this perspective, as different diagnoses and a lack of consensus on the exact nature of my issues continued to confound me. Mental illnesses, unlike physical ones, can be challenging to diagnose consistently, and the complexity of BPD further complicates matters.
