Which is Better for You: Playing Video Games or Sleeping?

Haha. This is just my personal opinion, but no matter how much I like video games, I will admit that sleeping is WAY BETTER when you are tired. This article explores my viewpoint on the topic, backed by both personal experience and the importance of basic human needs.

The Importance of Sleep

Video games, while a form of entertainment and a hobby, must be approached with moderation. I sleep because I’m tired, and not for fun. In fact, due to some complications with medication, I experienced a period of 29 hours without sleeping at all. That period was absolutely brilliant. However, it is clear that sleep is one of the most primary needs humans have. Like food and water, it is essential for survival. From a psychological standpoint, it ranks at the bottom of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, placing it just below safety and security.

A Fundamental Need

Understanding the hierarchy of needs can provide clarity on the importance of rest. The pyramid of Maslow’s hierarchy, simplified, indicates that the bottom-level needs, such as food, water, and sleep, are the most fundamental for human survival. Only after these basic needs are met can individuals focus on higher-level needs, such as love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Thus, the importance of sleep cannot be overstated.

Adopting a Balanced Life

Obviously, sleep is incredibly important, and it should always come first. However, it is also important to note that sleep is not the only thing we should be doing. In my personal experience, as a person with insomnia and someone who makes a living playing video games, the situation is slightly different. For those who cannot sleep well, the choice of playing video games might be a better option. My preference for playing video games is not just about the fun but also about earning a living. The downside is that it is an addiction, and like any addiction, it needs to be managed.

Benefits of Video Games in a Fantasy World

Video games can provide a sensory escape, offering a fantasy world that can stimulate thinking, planning, and creativity. In contrast, watching TV or movies can provide a more passive experience. Both activities can be addictions, but sleep offers relief from stress and mental fatigue that video games might not provide. In the end, while sleeping is undoubtedly better, it is essential to find a balance that ensures the well-being of the individual.

Ultimately, the choice between sleep and video games depends on one's specific circumstances. For those with sleep difficulties, making the most of video games as a form of entertainment can be a practical solution. However, for the general population, prioritizing rest should be a key part of a healthy lifestyle. The goal is to find a balance between these activities to maintain overall well-being.
