Breaking Free from Depression: A Journey of Purpose and Empowerment
Depression, often referred to as a 'drug,' can lead individuals to a place where they choose to remain due to a sense of comfort. However, understanding the underlying reasons for one's depression and finding a purpose can tremendously help in breaking free from these tendencies and improving overall mental health. This article explores how discovering a sense of purpose can empower you to overcome depression and highlights a personal journey of resilience and empowerment.
The Power of Depression and the Role of Purpose
Depression can be deeply ingrained in our mental state. Yet, it is important to note that we have the choice to either maintain this state or take steps to alleviate it. Drawing inspiration from the case of Milton Erickson, who famously wrote 'My Voice Will Go With You,' it becomes clear that our choices play a critical role in our journey towards wellness.
Personal Reflection and Purpose
At the tender age of 14, I found myself questioning the purpose of my existence. A near-death experience led me to believe that there must be a reason for every individual’s life to continue, rather than simply dying. From this point on, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery aimed at identifying my purpose in life (keyword: purpose in life).
This realization was a turning point for me, guiding my every action and decision thereafter. Today, at the age of 52, I stand as an airline pilot, father to four sons and a daughter, proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren, and having experienced a fulfilling life more abundantly than many others. My journey has been marked by several health challenges, including three back and neck surgeries, yet I have managed to regain nearly full recovery, maintaining a strong body and mind.
The Power of Near-Death Experiences
Near-death experiences have been a recurring part of my life, each time serving as a reminder of the importance of life. My first near-death experience, even though it was intended to end my life, was actually a divine gift that allowed me to grow and understand the joy of life and the importance of not being selfish. It taught me to appreciate every moment and to give back to those who have helped me and who rely on me.
The Ultimate Purpose of Life: Losing Yourself in Others
A quote encapsulates this sentiment: 'Men are that they might have Joy.' This statement holds true not only for men but for women as well. The ultimate purpose in life should be to lose oneself in the service of others, in order to achieve true joy. This concept is beautifully illustrated by the story of my personal growth and resilience.
