Steps Involved

Grind the Pepto-Bismol pills into a fine powder. Dissolve the powder in a dilute solution of hydrochloric acid. Use a one-part concentrated HCl to five parts water solution, stirring the mixture carefully and thoroughly. Filter the liquid to remove the solid material, retaining the pinkish solution. Immerse aluminum foil in the pink acidic solution to cause bismuth metal to precipitate out of solution. Filter the solution again and retain the blackish precipitate. Neutralize the acid once the process is complete.

The black solid will be bismuth metal, possibly mixed with some impurities. You can heat this material to melt the bismuth, separate any impurities that appear during melting, and if you are lucky, you will see small crystals of bismuth metal growing as the material cools, with the formation of an oxide layer. Melting bismuth does not require very high temperatures; 300 degrees Celsius should be sufficient. However, much higher temperatures will be required to burn you, so care is essential.

An alternative method involves burning the pills directly with a blowtorch, turning them into an ash that contains bismuth oxide. Further work is needed to refine the bismuth metal from the oxide.
