Is it possible to live without seeing a doctor regularly? I certainly have managed to do so for over three decades, and I haven’t seen one since my ETS physical in 1991. Is my health any worse for it?
Contrary to popular belief, having an unhealthy obsession with frequent doctor visits might be counterproductive to overall health. Many people seem to believe that frequent trips to the doctor equate to better health, but that’s not always the case.
Breaking Mysteries Without Doctors
I've personally gone 71 years without seeing a doctor, relying solely on the advice and self-assessment available through websites like WebMD. The advice offered virtually is often consistent with that of a real doctor. And despite avoiding medical professionals, I've survived and thrived without any fatal ailments.
Adopting a Healthy Lifestyle
Avoiding the doctor doesn’t mean ignoring your health. My immunization efforts in childhood have provided some protection, but staying healthy relies on much more – a nutritious diet, limited sweets and alcohol, and regular exercise. Additionally, refraining from smoking and living in a safe environment are crucial. By following these guidelines, I believe I have about 30 more healthy years ahead of me.
Exceptional Cases - The Healthiest Without Doctors
But it's not just about personal experience; some individuals managed to live remarkably long and healthy lives without frequent doctor visits. The example of my friend’s family is particularly fascinating. Their mother, with excellent genes, lived to 89 and never took any medications beyond routine infant inoculations. Her eldest daughter and youngest son also led long, healthy lives, despite not seeking medical help for everyday ailments until they naturally resolved.
The cases of my friend's family illustrate that living without doctors is possible, albeit rare. However, it underscores the importance of a strong genetic background and solid self-care practices.

Doctors are invaluable to society. While it's possible to navigate life without them, they play a crucial role in diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases. They help alleviate suffering and improve quality of life. Doctors should not be avoided solely for convenience but respected as essential members of our healthcare system.
Regular doctor visits are essential for those who are unwell or have chronic conditions. For the rest, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition, exercise, and avoiding harmful behaviors, can significantly reduce the need for frequent medical appointments.
In summary, while living without regular doctor visits can be a viable option for some, understanding the role of doctors and adopting a proactive, healthy lifestyle is key to overall well-being.
