It's a common misconception that cholesterol is solely a concern for non-vegetarian diets. In reality, processed carbohydrates and high-sugar foods can also contribute to elevated cholesterol levels.

Natural Sources of Cholesterol

Cholesterol is exclusively found in animal products, whereas fibre, which helps lower cholesterol, is predominantly found in plants. This distinction is crucial for understanding the impact of different dietary choices on cholesterol levels.

Optimizing Cholesterol Levels

The carnivore diet has been praised for its ability to optimize cholesterol levels, especially HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and triglyceride levels. A study by Kostenko et al. highlighted the importance of HDL and triglyceride levels in cardiac risk stratification, emphasizing that a TG:HDL ratio of 1.83 is optimal. This ratio is a crucial metric in assessing cardiovascular health.

As someone who follows a carnivore diet, my HDL level is 100, and my triglyceride level is 50. My TG:HDL ratio is 50/100 or 0.5, which is exceptionally good! It's important to note that laboratory interpretations of cholesterol levels are far more nuanced and require a comprehensive analysis beyond just a raw number.

Genetics and Exercise

Recent studies suggest that high cholesterol levels are more influenced by genetics and exercise than diet. A sedentary lifestyle poses a higher risk of elevated cholesterol than the consumption of saturated fats and eggs. This perspective shifts the focus from dietary choices to lifestyle factors that can significantly impact cholesterol levels.

Myths and Realities

There is scant evidence that wild carnivores such as wolves, cats, and mustelids have significant cholesterol problems. This implies that the body has mechanisms to manage cholesterol levels effectively. In humans, a 2017 study suggested that high cholesterol is predominantly linked to genetics and lifestyle, rather than diet.

Health Considerations and the Carnivore Diet

While the carnivore diet is rich in cholesterol, it is also important to consider other health factors. Constipation is a common issue reported by those following the carnivore diet, and the odor of their waste can be quite strong, rendering constipation an unpleasant experience. Given these challenges, it is recommended to maintain a balanced diet that includes vegetables for overall health and well-being.
