Cheering Up on a Difficult Day: The Healing Power of Music
It's no secret that music has the power to soothe the soul and lift spirits. Whether you're feeling down, stressed, or simply in need of a pick-me-up, certain songs can act as a balm for the mind and soul. In this article, we'll explore how listening to music, particularly songs from the 70s and 80s, can help one feel better during challenging times.
The Healing Journey Through Melodies: A Personal Account
When the weight of the world feels too heavy to bear, music can be a powerful antidote to depression and stress. For instance, listening to the melodies of the 70s and 80s can transport you to a time of simpler, more carefree days and offer a sense of respite from the chaos of modern life. These songs often feature the unforgettable voices of legendary singers such as Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, whose music continues to captivate audiences even decades after their time.
Specific Songs to Lift Your Spirits
In moments of distress, I often turn to specific songs that bring a sense of comfort and solace. When depression or other negative emotions creep in, a particular song can help shift my focus away from distress and towards a more positive state of mind.
Songs for a Melodic Journey
Chaos Chaos - Do You Feel it?: This song captures a sense of unpredictability and emotional turbulence, making it an excellent choice for those feeling overwhelmed. Ali Gatie - Sunrise: The melodic and uplifting beat of "Sunrise" can energize and motivate you, helping to lift your spirits and replace pessimism with a hopeful outlook. JP Cooper - Shivers (Live): This song, with its emotional and powerful live performance, can evoke a range of positive and cathartic emotions. Lady - You Bring Me Up When I Am Down - The Commodores: This classic track offers a feel-good boost and a reminder that you're not alone in your struggles. Lamaallem - Saad Lamjarred: This song provides a sense of resilience and shows that even in the darkest moments, there is always hope.Alleviating Anxiety Through Music
Music can also serve as a valuable tool for managing anxiety and promoting a sense of calm. I often use my Amazon Echo Dot to play the entire album of The Best of Steely Dan, which is known for its intricate and soothing soundscapes. The gentle rhythm and harmonies of this album can be incredibly calming and provide a distraction from anxious thoughts.
Other specific songs that I find particularly helpful for reducing anxiety include:

The power of music extends beyond just alleviating negative emotions. It can also provide a sense of nostalgia and connection, which can be incredibly healing. When I bought my son and I an Echo Dot for Christmas, we decided to explore the Amazon Music library for soothing songs. One of my favorites to play is What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, accompanied by an ukulele, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, better known as Iz. Iz's rendition is a particularly joyful and calming version of the song, especially as it was performed with an oxygen tank by his side.
Iz passed away due to obesity-related health issues at the age of 800lbs, but his music lives on thanks to his persistence and the recordings he left behind. Listening to his music has not only brought me comfort and assurance but also a sense of respect for his enduring legacy and the joy he brought to countless lives.
