Duration of Swollen Lymph Nodes: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

The body's normal response to disease or infection is swollen lymph nodes. These are small, soft, and tender bumps that indicate your immune system is fighting against an infection. If the enlargement is due to a skin infection such as impetigo, the regional lymph nodes closest to the infection and the drainage system towards the heart will enlarge almost at the rate of the bacterial growth. With proper antibiotic treatment, the lymph nodes will regress almost parallel with the improvement in the infection, which can take under a week. On the other hand, an infection caused by a slow-growing organism like TB or a fungal infection may take months to resolve, as treatment for these infections can also take several months.

In cases where swollen lymph nodes are a result of a reaction to cancerous cells, the resolution of the swelling occurs at the rate of improvement due to proper therapy. Without therapy, the lymph nodes will grow unchecked as they fill with cancerous cells. If you have a persistent node that lasts more than a couple of weeks, it is advisable to see a doctor.
