Efficacy of Home Remedies and Traditional Medicines in Treating Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): A Personal Case Study

I am 72 years old and have been a diabetic for over 20 years. At 71, I found myself in the hospital for another condition and was informed that my kidneys were failing, necessitating dialysis. A CT scan also revealed cysts on my kidneys. When I returned home, I determined to find out more about my kidneys and how to maintain their health. I delved into numerous studies about the importance of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) for kidney function. As we get older and as diabetics, our body produces less sodium bicarbonate, and consequently, the kidneys suffer. The kidneys' normal function helps in the production of nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and enhances blood flow, among other benefits.

Exploring Home Remedies for CKD

I researched home remedies and traditional medicine like Ayurveda and Unani for treating chronic kidney disease (CKD). One of the key findings was the role of sodium bicarbonate. A diabetes educator had suggested that 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda per day could be beneficial for kidney function. My medical records indicated a creatinine level of 2.64 and an eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) of 23. I decided to experiment with kidney flushes using sodium bicarbonate.

My Experience with Kidney Flushes

On the first day, I placed 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda under my tongue for better absorption. Over the next two days, I consumed 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 1.5 liters of water, spread out throughout the day. On the fourth day, I returned to my doctor for a follow-up, and the results were promising: my creatinine level had dropped to 1.5, and my eGFR had increased to 46. My doctor approved my method but advised me to omit the salt after the initial phase to observe if further improvement could be achieved.

Continuing Treatment and Follow-up

I continued the kidney flushes, but without the salt, as advised by my doctor. I scheduled another set of tests a few weeks later, and the results were positive. My creatinine level further dropped to 1.24, and my eGFR was up to 62, both in the normal range. I continue to drink the water mix every day and monitor my blood pressure, which remains normal. I also schedule follow-up tests every few months to ensure ongoing improvement.

Conclusion and Advice

My personal experience with home remedies and traditional medicines has been particularly effective in managing my chronic kidney disease. However, it is pivotal to customize any treatment plan based on individual health conditions and consult healthcare professionals. This approach has worked well for me, and I sincerely hope that others may find success with similar methods. Here's to good health and continued research in traditional and home remedies for renal health.
