Introduction

Everyone in healthcare has stories. Some are funny, some are embarrassing, and some are simply a reminder of those moments when nerves got the best of us. This article delves into three incidents where healthcare professionals found themselves in awkward, embarrassing, or mortifying situations, from a Dental Implant Specialist and a Surgery Resident.

The Dental Implant Specialist's Unexpected Passout

As a Dental Implant Specialist Technician, Jane regularly visits various surgeries to assist with chairside work for All on 4 implant placements. Usually, she waits until the surgical procedure is almost complete before stepping in. But on one occasion, it was a new client and the procedure was being performed without supervision. Jane was called in at the very beginning of the surgical procedure, something she was not accustomed to. Stressed and perhaps inexperienced, she unexpectedly fainted. The impact of hitting her head on the edge of the surgery chair startled both the patient and the client, leading to an urgent visit to the hospital for six stitches. Despite the physical discomfort, the incident still haunts Jane to this day.

A Chief Surgery Resident's Careless Humor

Back in her days as a chief surgery resident, Mary was part of a group making afternoon rounds. During a visit, she was responsible for reassuring a patient with an anal fistula. In an attempt to lighten the mood, she said, "We're going to lick the problem!" Little did she know, such a straightforward statement could cause a major uproar. Mary's intentions were clear, yet the choice of words was ill-timed. Sure, she wished for a magic hole to disappear into, but no such luck. She had to endure the shared laughter, including from the patient!

A Thoughtless Comment and a Black Eye

Emma, a triaging nurse, always finds herself opening her mouth to address both feet. Once, she was triaging a baby who was the same age as her own son—about 9 to 10 months old. She was communicating with the baby, saying things similar to what she would tell her own son. However, she used the term "monkey" without realizing the cultural sensitivities involved in such a word. The parents, who were black, were clearly offended and stared at her in disbelief for a moment. It took Emma a while to realize her mistake and to apologize. Even so, the parents were still irritated. This led Emma to reconsider her words, and she now refers to babies as "pumpkins," a term that’s harder to offend others with.

Humor After the Shock

Finally, Emma was also reminded of another time during a trauma scenario. While turning a patient, she called out a brief cry of pain. Her colleagues, worried that she might be injured, stopped what they were doing and asked if she was okay. It transpired that the patient had kneed her in the chest! Emma was mortified at the time but has since learned to laugh about it. Her husband even sent her a funny picture to remind her of the awkwardness.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the many hilarious, embarrassing, and sometimes painful moments that can happen in healthcare. These stories serve as reminders to all of us to stay vigilant, mindful of our words, and to always have a sense of humor, even in the most uncomfortable situations.
