Essential Resources for Mastering Physiology in First-Year MBBS

The Best Books for Learning Physiology

As a current 2024 batch MBBS student, I have extensive experience in navigating the vast and challenging field of physiology. One of the gems of the medical curriculum, physiology, requires a solid foundation to thrive. Here, I share my experiences and recommendations on which books to refer to for a comprehensive understanding of this subject.

1. Guyton and Hall’s Textbook of Medical Physiology by John E. Hall

Guyton and Hall’s Textbook of Medical Physiology is the gold standard when it comes to mastering physiology. It's widely acknowledged and used in many medical schools for its depth and clarity. This book provides clear explanations of physiological concepts, supported by detailed illustrations and diagrams. It covers the entire spectrum of physiological topics from basic mechanisms to complex integrative processes.

2. Biochemistry and Physiology: Molecules to the Cell by Linda S. Costanzo

Biochemistry and Physiology: Molecules to the Cell is another excellent resource. Despite the title which suggests a focus on biochemistry, this book is incredibly helpful for understanding the integration of biochemical processes with physiological functions. The book is highly organized and easy to follow, making it perfect for first-year MBBS students.

3. Moore: Clinically Oriented Anatomy by Lauralee Sherwood

Moore: Clinically Oriented Anatomy by Lauralee Sherwood is a must-read for students of all levels. While primarily an anatomy textbook, it provides valuable insights into the physiological processes that are anatomically based. The author's balanced approach makes the book both detailed and readable, ensuring that even complex concepts are accessible.

4. Johnson: Basic Medical Physiology: Life Sciences by Michael L. Johnson

Basic Medical Physiology: Life Sciences by Michael L. Johnson is an excellent choice for students who want a strong foundation in physiology with a focus on clinical applications. This book is particularly useful for those who prefer to see the practical implications of physiological principles in real-world scenarios.

A Review Book for Success

Dr. Soumen Manna Sir’s Review Book for Physiology

For your review and final preparation, I strongly recommend Dr. Soumen Manna Sir’s Review Book for Physiology. This book is focused entirely on concepts, and it’s not just invaluable for your current course but also helpful for your next academic year as well. The concise and clear format makes it a great companion for exam preparation.

Video Lectures for Deeper Understanding

While I didn’t watch video lectures for physiology, I came across some highly recommended platforms from my juniors. Dr. Soumen Manna Sir, a gold medalist in physiology from AIIMS-D, teaches on Prepladder. His lectures are outstanding and highly beneficial. Similarly, Dr. Krishna Kumar Sir from Marrow is equally well-respected but his lectures tend to be longer and often include pharmaceutical concepts.

Consider these resources to enhance your learning experience. Select the ones that align with your learning style and needs. Happy studying!
