Experiencing Meditation at the Shri Ramana Maharishi Ashram in Tamil Nadu

On September 13, 2024, I had the privilege of visiting the Ramana Maharishi Ashram in Arunachalam, Tamil Nadu. This visit was the realization of a long-held wish, and it was truly a profound experience.

A Spiritual Journey

The early morning at the ashram was serene, as I had the opportunity to pay respects to Arunachalerwara and Parvati Ammavari. Later, in the evening, I found myself in the meditation hall of Shri Ramana Maharishi, a place filled with foreigners, yet full of an unbroken silence. Despite my lack of formal meditation practice, I decided to sit for a few minutes to experience this sacred space.

Initial Struggles with Meditation

I chose a corner of the hall and began my meditation using the jnana mudra, where the index finger touches the thumb. In just a few seconds, I noticed something unusual. My fingers began to spread wide, as if a current was flowing through them. This peculiar sensation was unlike anything I had experienced before, and it was soon clear that it was energy.

As the minutes passed, I observed a whirlwind of activity within my body. With my eyes closed, I saw a whirlpool of white, bright energy, swirling from a small point at the base of my body through to the top of my head. There was a strong sensation in the middle of my head, much like a pinprick. Subconsciously, I realized my body was rotating in a clockwise direction, influenced by this energy.

Hard Gained Control

The experience lasted for about 15 minutes, during which I remained locked into the vortex of energy. The sensation was so intense that I felt I couldn't extricate myself from it. It was as if a tornado was moving my body in a circular motion, with the bottom ring starting as a small point and expanding to reach my head.

When my husband, an expert in meditation, touched my hand, I snapped out of the trance. Despite this, the experience resurfaced shortly thereafter, urging me to try again. I followed my husband's advice to sit near the wall, six inches away, to create a physical barrier.

The second try was even more intense, with the energy movement resembling an oval shape, going in a counterclockwise direction. My body moved with greater physicality, and I could feel the difference. Eventually, I managed to break free from this heightened state of energy.

A Final Attempt

Despite the initial difficulties, I was determined to give the experience one last chance. As I sat, a strange force began to push my head back. With great effort, I bent my head down, only to have it hit the wall. My eyes opened, and the experience was over. My husband explained what had happened, but it was too technical for me to fully grasp.

Seeking Understanding

For meditation experts out there, I would love to hear your explanation of what I experienced. Understanding these phenomena is crucial to gaining deeper insights into meditation and its effects on the human body and mind.

Conclusion

My visit to the Ramana Maharishi Ashram was not just a journey of spiritual exploration but also a profound personal experience. Whether one believes in the power of meditation or not, such experiences highlight the vastness and mystery of human consciousness.
