Experiencing Radiation Therapy: Personal Insights and Common Side Effects

When discussing cancer treatment, radiation therapy is a crucial part of the journey for many patients. While this therapy can be highly effective, it is not without its challenges. In this article, we will explore the experiences of someone who underwent radiation therapy post-surgery for stage IV gastro/esophageal junction cancer. We will cover the procedure itself, side effects, and personal insights into how one managed through the process.

Understanding Radiation Therapy

What is radiation therapy?

Radiation therapy, often called radiotherapy, is a common form of treatment for cancer. It involves using high-energy radiation to target and destroy cancer cells. This treatment can be used alone or in combination with other therapies such as chemotherapy and surgery.

Personal Experience with Radiation Therapy

Stage IV Cancer and Post-Surgical Treatment

The journey for someone facing stage IV gastro/esophageal junction cancer can be daunting. In my case, surgery was followed by a course of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. My path to recovery included a holistic diet, but I still needed the intervention of radiation therapy to address any remaining cancer cells.

I underwent radiation therapy and chemotherapy for five days each week over a period of five weeks. The radiation was directed from the top of my sternum to just below my navel, focusing on the area where the cancer had been located.

Preparation and Setup

Pre-Setup Process

The treatment process began with a detailed setup. A plastic form was created to hold my head and torso in a precise position for every treatment. This ensured consistency and accuracy in the delivery of radiation. A regular CT scan was performed to ensure the exact positioning of the radiation source.

Two small black tattoos were placed on my skin to assist in aligning the radiation equipment. These marks were essential for the technicians to ensure the radiation was delivered accurately to the specified area.

The Procedure

Positioning and Treatment

I was strapped into my custom plastic form, which was designed to keep me stable during the treatment. A device on my chest tracked the movement of my chest to adjust the radiation machine, ensuring the targeted area received the precise dose. This adjustment was necessary to account for the natural movements of my breathing.

The technician used the small marks on my torso to line up the radiation machine. I was asked to stay as still as possible for about twenty minutes while the radiation was applied. It's important to note that the treatment itself was completely painless.

Side Effects and Management

Challenges and Changes

As the five weeks of treatment progressed, I began to experience some changes in my body. I felt progressively weaker, lost my appetite, and started to lose weight. While these changes were significant, they were ultimately manageable.

Aside from the physical challenges, radiation therapy targeted my esophagus, which is very close to the trachea. This proximity led to some collateral damage, resulting in a persistent cough. If I needed to cough during a treatment session, I would inform the technician, who would pause the treatment and resume it once the coughing subsided.

Conclusion and Personal Reflections

Gratitude and Reflection

Overall, the experience of undergoing radiation therapy was painless, and the side effects, while challenging, were manageable. I am very grateful that I received the treatment, along with chemotherapy and surgery, fifteen years ago. This experience has provided valuable insights into the journey of cancer treatment and the impact of radiation therapy.

Lessons Learned

My experience serves as a reminder that while radiation therapy is a significant part of cancer treatment, it is just one piece of the puzzle. A holistic approach, including diet, exercise, and mental health support, can play a crucial role in managing the side effects and improving overall well-being during and after treatment.
