Exploring Spirituality: Beyond Religion or a Way of Life?

Is spirituality a religion or simply a way of life? This question probes the essence of human existence and touches on the fundamental aspects of religious and non-religious beliefs.

What is Spirituality?

Many would argue that spirituality is not a religion. A religion typically involves organized institutions, structured communities, and leadership by religious figures. Spirituality, on the other hand, is far more individualistic, emphasizing personal exploration and inner experiences.

The Flexibility of Spirituality

One of the hallmarks of spirituality is its flexibility and openness. Unlike religion, which often has specific belief systems, spirituality allows for a broader range of beliefs and practices. It emphasizes personal experience, inner wisdom, and direct encounters with the transcendent without the need for formal religious structures.

The Human Condition and the Stories We Tell

Despite the clear distinction between religion and spirituality, many people still grapple with a sense of right and wrong that seems deeply ingrained. This has a lot to do with the stories we tell each other. There is no true “spiritual point of view.”

In the end, what we are and always have been has nothing to do with these stories. There is no story that reveals to us what we already are, which is also why there is no one that awakens. There can be no “my awakening” because you can’t unconfuse yourself with a “correct story” and you can’t ever outsmart yourself.

Subjectivity and Meaning

It is both. Either way is correct as per one's own understanding. Anything that is subjective has the same problem because you can’t picture an object. To prove when I say 'pen', there is no confusion. However, when you say 'happy' or 'spiritual' or 'scientific', it becomes very difficult to convey the same meaning to others. So far, humanity has not achieved this, and people keep on discussing and debating without any conclusion.

From Subject to Way of Life

Similar to how your profession started as a career but eventually became a way of life, spirituality similarly begins as a subject and evolves into a way of life. Your social, political, economic, and personal life all slowly get subsumed and become a part of your life as a way of life.

However, the surprising fact is that spirituality seemingly starts only when you are free from all other aspects of life. In reality, spirituality precedes all, and all other aspects are subordinate and subjugated to it. Spirituality decides everything else, and not vice versa. A commercial, social, or professional gain is first approved by destiny, which can be perceived through spirituality.

Focus on the Roots for Better Fruits

The growth of a life tree depends on how well the roots are nurtured. Meditation, which brings peace and prosperity, is the nurturing process. It is the need of the hour to focus on the roots to have better fruits.

Conclusion

Whether you view spirituality as a religion or a way of life, it is essential to recognize its importance in shaping our lives. By understanding and nurturing the roots of spirituality, we can pave the way for a more fulfilling and harmonious existence.
