Exploring the Impact of Risperdal and Lexapro on Weight Loss
Introduction
Discontinuing medications like Risperdal and Lexapro should only be done under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Weight changes may occur as a result of medication adjustments; however, prioritizing mental health and consulting with a doctor for personalized treatment options is essential. Personal Experience with Weight Gain and Mood Disorders
Over the past three years, I took Risperidone to manage mood disorders, but this came at a cost. I gained a significant amount of weight, three stone in total. Despite stopping the medication in April of the previous year, my weight loss journey was not as straightforward as one might expect. Between July and November, I managed to shed the three stone, achieving a size 14 after previously being a size 10. My primary physician, however, has now prescribed Propranolol, which I take only when needed, providing a much better experience compared to Risperidone.
Understanding the Role of Risperdal in Weight Gain
Second-generation antipsychotics, such as Risperdal, are associated with metabolic syndrome, resulting in obesity around the waist, elevated blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, and elevated cholesterol/triglyceride levels. These factors significantly increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Risperdal specifically contributes to weight gain by inducing carbohydrate cravings. Unfortunately, my doctor did not warn me about these potential side effects of Risperidone.

Mechanism of Action and Weight Gain
Anti-psychotics, including Risperdal, work by lowering the amount of chemicals in the brain responsible for motivation, drive, and energy, specifically by reducing dopamine levels. This can make it significantly harder to move around and exercise when feeling lethargic and tired all the time. Moreover, Risperdal interacts with serotonin receptors in a way that can cause weight gain. Serotonin is involved in the feeling of being “full” after eating, and individuals on anti-psychotics might experience either hunger or an inability to feel full, leading to cravings for sugary or high-carbohydrate foods that can cause weight gain.
Hormonal Impact and Drowsiness
Another factor contributing to weight gain with Risperdal is its interference with hormones, including testosterone, which can lead to lower energy levels. The medication also activates the same histamine receptor as antihistamines like Benadryl, which can cause drowsiness. Essentially, being on Risperdal feels like having your body half asleep, which can explain the reduced energy levels and difficulty engaging in physical activity.
Efficacy of SSRI Combination and Alternative Solutions
SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) like Lexapro are known to cause weight gain. Combining an SSRI with Risperdal can exacerbate the weight gain, as the combination increases the amount of Risperdal in the body. Finding ways to increase energy levels is crucial. Modafinil, for instance, might be a potential solution for enhancing cognitive function and increasing energy levels without the side effects of Risperdal and Lexapro.
