Finding Purpose in Life After a Disability
Introduction to Finding Purpose After a Disability
Who knows better than you about your own disability? Try to research your options based on the specifics of your condition. Your purpose in life is entirely up to you and can be shaped through a variety of activities, interests, or volunteer work.
Exploring Possible Paths to Purpose
Your purpose is what you define it to be. Devote your free time to hobbies, interests, and activities that bring you joy. You can also use this time to reflect and learn more about yourself. Volunteering to help those in need is another meaningful way to find purpose. There are endless opportunities to make a difference in the world.
Overcoming Barriers and Embracing Opportunities
No obstacle should stand in your way when it comes to finding purpose. Even if you are handicapped, you still have many opportunities to work. A bedridden person, for instance, can still ‘do Jap Tap as Vishnu Ram or Krishna name’. Never think you are jobless. The mindset matters, and you can always find work.
Working with a Positive Attitude
“Can’t work” is often an assumption that something is preventing you from doing positive things for society. However, it is not necessarily true. You can always find ways to contribute, even if you cannot work in the traditional sense. Look to those who have faced similar challenges and have overcome them.
Embracing the Journey of Purpose
Many of us define our purpose through our professional accomplishments and the financial stability they provide. When a disability prevents this, it can be a significant challenge. However, giving up on finding a new way to judge your value is harmful. You can find new ways to contribute and be valued.
Take steps to recognize the value in your contributions, no matter how small. Would you consider a stay-at-home parent to have no value because they don’t work outside the home? Most people would not. You bring something unique to your friends, family, and home every day, no matter your limitations. Even simple personal achievements, like taking a shower independently, should be celebrated.
May the Lord keep and bless you through your trials, Amen. Remember, your value is not defined by your ability to work, but by the positive impact you make on the world and those around you.
