As a psychology teacher and a qualified ASD assistant, I have witnessed the powerful effects of both medication and therapy on individuals with ADD/ADHD. While medication can offer quick relief for some individuals, it is my belief that therapy, especially with the inclusion of physical exercise and specialized educational environments, can achieve long-term improvement without the need for medication in many cases.
Therapy: The Backbone of Add/ADHD Management
According to the latest research conducted in Germany, therapy has a success rate of approximately 34%, significantly higher than the 28% success rate of medication. However, it is essential to recognize that in cases of severe ADD/ADHD, medication may be the only viable option. My personal experience and journey have led me to develop a routine that can help individuals without the need for prescriptions.
Staying Physically Active: A Blessing in Disguise
Start your day with vigorous exercise such as running, cycling, or swimming. This helps to channel the hyperactivity into something constructive. For individuals who are not naturally sporty, incorporating simple coordination exercises like marching can still yield positive results. My experience with numerous ADHD boys on camps has shown that they can thrive without medication, but the need for it often resurfaces once they return home.
Education and Independent Living
Education, and more specifically, obtaining a degree or a trade, is crucial for individuals with ADD/ADHD. The ability to be independent is paramount, and despite challenges, education can provide a pathway to self-sufficiency. However, it’s important to note that some individuals may require significant support and constant therapy to navigate these challenges successfully.
Tackling Classroom Challenges
In a classroom setting, it might be challenging for some individuals with ADD/ADHD to concentrate amidst parental pressure, noise, and unruly classmates. One of the most effective strategies is to provide a distraction-free environment, such as a cubicle. It’s crucial to maintain a balance between encouragement and setting boundaries. Celebrate successes and address failures constructively. Over time, many students can overcome these challenges.
Parental and Environmental Support
It’s also essential to address the home environment, as it often exacerbates the issues faced by ADD/ADHD individuals. Teachers from the past, such as those from the 1960s, would often visit students at home to assess the environment. I have found that children who arrive at school unruly and severely distracted often need assistance from their parents. Offering support and guidance to parents can significantly impact the child’s behavior and development.
The Role of Continuous Therapy
Therapy is a continuous process. Despite the best efforts, progress may be slow and uneven, with phases of advancement followed by regression. However, with persistent effort and belief in the potential for improvement, success is achievable. It’s important to note that therapy sessions lasting only a year with two appointments may not yield substantial results. Even after therapy is completed, ongoing support is crucial. Success in managing ADD/ADHD is possible if all parties involved adhere to the treatment plans and maintain a positive outlook.
