Inspiration and Impact: My Journey to Fitness at 50
Inspiration and Impact: My Journey to Fitness at 50
My motivation to embark on a fitness journey stemmed from a variety of personal and professional reasons. As a type 2 diabetic, I realized that it was my responsibility to manage my blood sugar and A1C levels as effectively as I could. My latest A1C reading stood at a commendable 5.4, which I attribute to my healthy dietary choices and frequent exercise regimen.
Another significant reason was my dissatisfaction with the 'dad bod' typically associated with men in their 30s and 40s. Inspired by the idea of achieving a better physique, I took it upon myself to change my appearance and regain a sense of confidence. As a nutrition coach, I also felt the need to set a positive example for my clients, showing them that dedication and effort can lead to splendid results.
From Bullies to Bench Press
My fascination with weightlifting began at a young age, around thirteen, when I first took on a challenge with bullies. In that arm wrestling tournament, I outperformed everyone, and the feeling of victory was indescribable. It wasn't just about muscle; it was about speed, technique, and the application of power. This experience gave me a taste of achievement that I couldn't shake off.
Determined to explore my athletic potential further, I started lifting weights. I improvised a bench press using closet doors and filled burlap sacks with rocks as makeshift weights. Over the years, I upgraded to a proper bench press and weights, purchased from Yeager's Sporting Goods in Bellingham, Washington. I have cherished the memories of meeting Gene Kinisky on that day, the Canadian wrestler/football player, nearly forty years later, still lifting and loving every moment of it.
Alas, my youth was marked by partying, which likely hindered my full potential. However, the past eight years have seen significant strides in my fitness journey, and I have finally started living up to my aspirations.
Worth the Effort
When my doctor suggested a blood test to check for diabetes, the results confirmed that I was pre-diabetic. I decided to take action by losing 45 pounds, no longer considered pre-diabetic. The pivotal moment came when I hit 100 kg (220 lbs), signaling the beginning of my fitness journey.
I created a personalized 4F fitness program and made significant progress. In just under ten weeks, I managed to lose 10 kg (22 lbs). Today, I am starting to see a body that I've never had before, and it feels fantastic.
