My Raison Dêtre: The Purpose of Life and Pursuing Dreams
My Raison D'être: The Purpose of Life and Pursuing Dreams
Have you ever wondered what life is all about? What is the purpose of our existence? As we grow from young to old, we often find ourselves pondering these deep and profound questions. I have certainly done so, and I've even discussed this topic with a psychologist from Bulgaria and a German friend, who have different perspectives on the matter.
Exploring Life and Its Meaning
My fascination with the meaning of life was sparked by a conversation with my psychologist, who is not my therapist. She was more concerned with the present and doing the right thing in the moment, whereas I tend to focus on the big picture and what remains.
However, despite our differing viewpoints, we engaged in a friendly debate about the purpose of life and why we are here. We even turned our discussion into a podcast while enjoying a cheap but tasty glass of wine.
The Last Chapter of My Third Book
The final chapter of my third book, Raison D'être, is a culmination of stories, adventures, and reflections on a life well-lived. Initially, it was a collection of tales for friends and family, but it has evolved into a trilogy featuring a plethora of exotic locations, thrilling adventures, and diverse characters.
At the age of sixty-three when the book was published, I reflected on my life with few regrets and eager anticipation for the future. My wife Joell and I are planning to spend a year living aboard our motor home on the coast south of San Francisco, where we enjoy a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean, winding trails on the cliffs, and a magnificent dog-friendly beach.
Moreover, I am actively promoting my books with potential film producers, and there has been some interest in transforming them into a TV mini-series! Joell is experimenting with pastels and playing her violin. While it feels good to take a break, we are not finished adventuring...
Reflections on Life and Purpose
Often, I reminisce about the beautiful places I've visited, the experiences I've had, and the people who have added spice to my life. In my mid-thirties, I questioned my life's purpose and the reasons for my existence. I realized that I had already made a positive impact on many people, as they told me I had been a catalyst for change in their lives. This realization reaffirmed my belief that anyone can achieve their dreams if they focus, commit, and overcome fear and uncertainty.
To me, the fear is being stuck in a rut. I did not want to live my life hanging on in quiet desperation, as described by the English rock band Pink Floyd. For others, the dream might be a comfortable home, college for their children, or a secure retirement. Whatever their desire, I have always encouraged people to pursue their passions and live their dreams.
Unanticipated Connections
The unexpected outcome of my books is that I have continued to be a catalyst for some of my readers. People from all over the world who I will never meet have been touched by my stories. Comments in Amazon reviews and personal emails have resonated with their own dreams and aspirations. One man, inspired by my books, decided to buy a 46-foot sailboat and follow his dream to sail around the world!
Another notable impact is on an elderly cousin who used to read out loud to her sister and had not read a book in five years since her sister's death. At my mother's funeral, she pulled me aside and shared how reading my book rekindled her love for reading. My words have introduced readers to new places and people, expanding their horizons, and helping them overcome their fears and take the next steps towards their dreams.
My Raison D'être
In essence, my raison d'etre is to ignite a spark in my readers, to push through their walls of fear, and to encourage them to shift their focus towards their dreams. Whether a reader completes a grand voyage or not is irrelevant; what matters is that they have reached for their dream. Through my stories and reflections, I hope to add value to their lives and inspire them to pursue their own unique journeys.
My continued journey is not just about writing more books and nurturing my passions. It's about making a difference in the lives of others, one story at a time. As long as I can contribute positively to the world and inspire others to pursue their dreams, my life will have a meaningful purpose.
