Navigating Mental Health Diagnoses: How Derealization Affects Education and Career Aspirations

The journey of living with a mental health diagnosis can often feel challenging and uncertain. However, it is crucial to approach these challenges with the right mindset and resources. In my personal experience, being diagnosed with derealization did not hinder my ability to pursue higher education and build a successful career in software engineering.

Understanding Derealization

Derealization is a disorienting experience where the world around you feels unreal or distant. While it can be concerning, it is important to recognize that mental health diagnoses exist on a spectrum, and treatment can significantly improve symptoms. My diagnosis of derealization came as a surprise during my high school years, and it took time to understand and manage it effectively.

Getting Back to Education

Although my diagnosis posed some initial hurdles, I was determined to continue my education. After graduating from high school, I enrolled in a computer science program at a local college. The key to successfully integrating mental health management into my academic life was a strong support system and the right treatment. Here’s how I navigated these challenges:

Consulting a Psychiatrist: My psychiatrist played a critical role in managing my symptoms. They helped me find the right medication that stabilized my derealization. Regular Monitoring: I established a routine of regular check-ins with my psychiatrist to monitor the effectiveness of my medications and make necessary adjustments. Open Communication: I was proactive in providing feedback on how the medications affected my daily life and studies. Patient Approach: Adjusting to the right medications took time. It took me one full year to find the optimal treatment regimen before starting college. Succesful First Semester: With the support of my healthcare providers, I was able to start college and perform exceptionally well, earning straight As in the first semester.

Success in Education and Career

My journey did not end with college. I graduated with a 3.5 GPA and embarked on a successful career as a software engineer. Over the last 15 years, I have not only thrived in my profession but also contributed significantly to the field. My experience demonstrates that it is possible to juggle a mental health diagnosis and pursue educational and professional goals.

Understanding the Diagnosis Process

It’s important to recognize that diagnoses are not always set in stone. Sometimes, they may evolve over time. years later, I found out that my initial diagnosis was not entirely accurate. However, this realization was not as critical as the symptomatic management itself. Whether or not a diagnosis is accurate, the focus should be on treating and managing the symptoms.

Your psychiatrist will monitor and treat your symptoms with medications, while a counselor may use talk therapy to help you address them. Both forms of treatment are essential and should be combined for the best results. If your current providers are not providing effective treatment, consider seeking a second opinion and finding new providers who can better meet your needs.

Personal Responsibility and Continued Improvement

Your well-being is your top priority. Prioritize self-care and seek the necessary support to manage your symptoms effectively. By doing so, you can achieve a high level of productivity and fulfillment in both your academic and professional life.

Never give up and never surrender. My personal motto is: ‘NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER SURRENDER.’ Life with a mental health diagnosis comes with its share of ups and downs, but with the right support and treatment, it is possible to achieve your goals and lead a fulfilling life.
