Navigating Quora as a Therapist: Insights and Experiences

As a therapist, my journey to Quora began by accident, but it quickly became a platform where I could share my expertise and offer support to individuals seeking help. Here, I'll share my experience of how I got involved, the benefits and challenges I've faced, and why I continue to be an active participant.

How I Got Involved in Quora

I discovered Quora by chance when I received some intrusive Internet ads about it. Initially, I was unaware of what type of platform it was. However, my curiosity got the better of me, and I stumbled upon a question from a stepchild regarding their mother's allegedly abusive husband. This experience sparked an urge to respond and help, which ultimately led me to explore the platform further.

What initially drew me in was the interesting psychoanalytic environment that Quora offered. In the years before the pandemic, the platform was home to some prominent figures in the field, such as Jorge Silva, Colman Hogan, Brett Crudgington, and many others. Though these individuals are no longer active, my response to the stepchild's question initiated a chain of discussions and interactions that have significantly influenced my journey on Quora.

Why I Stay on Quora

I've stayed on Quora for several compelling reasons. One of the primary motivators is the sense of community and the opportunity to assist individuals who may not have access to traditional psychological support. Engaging in conversations and providing thoughtful responses has been incredibly rewarding, as I have received positive feedback from people like stepchildren and even other professionals.

As of now, I have contributed over 12,000 answers and garnered more than 260,000,000 views. This vast audience has allowed me to engage with a diverse range of individuals, some of whom I have met in person. It has also opened doors for professional collaborations and introduced me to some fascinating people who have shared valuable insights with me.

The Benefits of Being Involved on Quora

Being involved on Quora has brought several benefits. Firstly, it provides an invaluable opportunity to keep myself updated on the latest trends and challenges in mental health. By reading through the extensive array of responses to various questions, I can understand the struggles and needs of my clients better.

Additionally, participating in Quora has given me ideas for my podcast, "Trauma Demystified." The range of topics and experiences shared by the community help me plan episodes that resonate with my audience. Engaging with the platform has also allowed me to reflect on my own professional journey and the experiences of my clients, which can sometimes be challenging.

The Challenges of Being on Quora

While Quora offers numerous benefits, it also presents several challenges. One of the most significant is the nature of the questions asked. Many individuals seek public advice on deeply personal issues that should ideally be discussed in a confidential therapeutic setting. These questions are often vague and may obscure the true complexities of the situations.

Another challenge is the potential for misunderstandings, as responses given on the platform cannot be tailored to individual needs. This lack of personal interaction can lead to misinterpretations, which can be harmful. Moreover, I recognize that my position of power as a therapist can influence how my responses are perceived. Hence, I always include disclaimers and ensure that my responses are flexible to accommodate different interpretations.

A Personal Reflection

Despite these challenges, the personal connections and insights gained from Quora have been invaluable. It has allowed me to broaden my horizons and understand the nuances of various mental health issues. Reflecting on my journey and the experiences shared on Quora has helped me deepen my understanding of both myself and my clients.

Thank you, Steve Blad, for being one of the individuals I've met and learned from through this online community. Your contributions have not only enriched the platform but also my own professional journey.
