Navigating the Journey: Understanding and Overcoming Loneliness as an Aspie

We weren’t made to live this life alone. We were made to have connections with other people. We were made to spend time with people. That’s why you’re feeling lonely.

From Isolation to Engagement

You are changing. You aren’t happy alone anymore. You want and deserve more. That’s a very good thing. So you need to explore how to go forward and meet your needs. You will find happiness in caring for yourself. What would you like to do? Take small steps forward. I call them turtle steps—just one step forward is progress for you.

Discovering Positive Change

God didn’t wire humans to be alone. As one philosopher wrote, “No man is an island.” We were meant to spread the gospel of Christ and to help others as the Bible clearly teaches. I’m not sure what turned you around, but you’ll see this is a positive change once you start associating with the right kind of people. Please visit a Church of Christ, volunteer for something like a food bank or library, or join a group like a book club. There are millions of lonely people out there just waiting to meet someone like you! Blessings.

Understanding the Difference Between Solitude and Loneliness

Being alone and feeling lonely are different: being alone simply means you’re by yourself while loneliness is an emotional state where you feel disconnected or isolated. It’s natural for your needs and feelings about solitude to change over time. If you’re feeling lonely now, it might be helpful to explore ways to connect with others or engage in activities that bring you fulfillment.

Reflecting on Personal Growth

Reflect on what has changed for you. Are you looking to fill an inner void such as a lack of fulfillment or purpose? Maybe consider a new creative endeavor or reach out for new experiences that align with your current needs. It’s my experience that such challenging times concern our inner journey, and it’s here we find our solutions.

Practicing Gratitude for Inner Fulfillment

I live alone, have done for many years, and have always enjoyed my own company. However, there are moments of loneliness, and when these arrive, I find practising gratitude fills that void instantly. Cultivate gratitude as a sustainable method of coping with loneliness, and it can lead to a more fulfilling life.

Despite the challenges, it’s important to recognize that your journey is unique and valuable. Embrace the gifts your Aspergers brings and focus on building meaningful connections with others. Remember, no one is truly alone when they have the support and understanding of those around them.
