Ensure the soil is well-draining. This can be achieved by adding perlite, vermiculite, or coarse sand to clay or heavy soils. Improve the soil's fertility by incorporating organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. This will enhance nutrient availability without making the soil too rich. Avoid using soil with high clay content as it can retain too much water, leading to waterlogged conditions detrimental to the plants. Ensure the pH level is suitable.
