Optimal Timing for First Child After Marriage in Indian Society

The age-old question of when to start a family is best answered by the couple themselves. After marriage, you should expect to be questioned by society about when you plan to start a family. Elders often push for grandchildren, saying, "Just show us your child so we can die peacefully." However, it's important not to give in prematurely to such pressure. Once you decide on the timing, stick to it and plan accordingly. Modern couples often delay conception for various reasons, such as career aspirations or simply enjoying the early years of marriage. If unrealistic expectations from society are pushing you, it's okay to defer conception.

Personal Decision Making in Indian Society

Many Indian couples decide to delay having a child for two years to focus on their careers or personal lives. Our journey towards parenthood also included a second honeymoon, followed by planning for the baby. However, just five months after our second honeymoon, we unexpectedly found out we were pregnant. Initially, we were both disappointed and felt like our blissful marriage had taken a turn. Our older sister helped us understand that both of us were contributing to any stress, and soon we found ourselves relaxing and embracing the changes that came with our new family. Today, we are proud parents of a 5-year-old, and we love him more than anything else.

Social and Emotional Changes After Marriage

For newlyweds, the initial phase post-marriage is one of happiness and excitement. Physical attraction peaks in the first 30 days and maintains a heightened state for about two months. However, as the couple spends more time together, the constant closeness can reveal less flattering personal traits, leading to small feelings of disgust. To cope with this, many newlyweds go on full-day outings to break the routine. Unexpectedly, a pregnancy announcement in a few months can change everything to happiness and care. The sudden shift in dynamics and the husband's newfound "maternal" instincts can bring a new joy to the relationship.

Psychological Impact on New Parents

The birth of a child tends to solidify a bond between the couple. The joy and happiness of a new baby spread throughout the family and extended family, leading to numerous celebrations. The baby brings about daily changes and milestones, providing daily updates that keep the couple distracted from focusing on each other's weaknesses. Each day brings a new milestone, and the couple is reminded of the journey they have embarked upon together. By the time the child reaches five years old, the couple has become intimate with each other's daily lives and shared experiences, leading to a profound sense of togetherness and affection.
