Cooking Fresh Baby Spinach

Step 1: Rinse and Dry the Spinach

To ensure the best results when cooking fresh baby spinach, start by rinsing the leaves. Fill a bowl or clean sink with cool, clean water and swish the spinach around to remove any dirt. Avoid further agitation to allow any dirt to settle to the bottom. Remove the spinach by hand or tongs and pat it dry with a clean towel or paper towel. If you have a salad spinner, you can use this to remove excess water.

Step 2: Cut the Spinach (If Desired)

Remove the tough stems from the leaves, if you prefer not to eat them, and cut the leaves into smaller pieces for easier cooking and serving. The stems are edible, although they may be slightly tougher and more fibrous than the leaves. Cooking will reduce their texture.

Step 3: Saute the Spinach in a Skillet

Add the rinsed and dried spinach to a skillet or pan and stir or turn to cook evenly. Heat the spinach over medium heat. You can add a small amount of oil or butter to prevent sticking. Cooking Frozen Baby Spinach

Step 1: Thaw the Frozen Spinach

Thaw frozen spinach in the refrigerator a day or two in advance, or in a room temperature environment if required. Keep the spinach in its original packaging or a sealed bag to prevent spills. If you need a quicker solution, defrost it in the microwave, but avoid cooking it until defrosting is complete.

Step 2: Drain Excess Liquid (If Desired)

If you plan to use the spinach in a recipe that requires less liquid, you can squeeze or press the spinach lightly to remove excess moisture. Use a cloth towel, paper towels, or a potato ricer for this purpose.

Step 3: Saute the Thawed Spinach

Add the thawed spinach to a skillet and saute over medium heat. You can add a small amount of oil or butter, but the natural moisture of the spinach will be enough to prevent sticking. Stir or turn the spinach until it’s wilted and evenly heated.

Step 4: Boil the Thawed Spinach

Place the thawed spinach in a pot of water, cover it with water, and bring to a boil. Cook for three to five minutes, then drain. This method is quick and suitable for quick-cooking recipes.

Step 5: Microwave the Thawed Spinach

Place the thawed spinach in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave on high for 30 seconds to two minutes. Cover the bowl with a lid to retain moisture, or add some additional water for better consistency. This method is ideal for a quick and easy solution.

Eating Cooked Baby Spinach

Step 1: Seasonings and Flavors

Enhance the flavor of cooked spinach by adding various seasonings. You can use garlic, lemon, or other common flavorings. Heat a pan with a little oil or butter and add garlic or onion to cook for a few minutes before adding the spinach. You can also add a pinch of sea salt, black pepper, or chili flakes for extra flavor.

Step 2: Cream the Spinach

Create a creamy dish by adding cooked spinach to a mixture of whipping cream, butter, onion, and garlic. Cook the sauce by gently simmering it with nutmeg, salt, and pepper until the cream starts to thicken. Add the spinach and simmer for two minutes to combine.
