Reflections on Independence and Patience in Modern Life
Reflections on Independence and Patience in Modern Life
Today marks our 78th Independence Day, a day usually filled with celebrations and pride. However, this year feels different. This independence is marred by a stark reality: a significant portion of our population struggles to enjoy the freedoms they should deserve. Give special attention to our girls; their rights and personal freedoms are often severely limited. There are countless restrictions placed on them, from not being able to go out at night to being restricted in the type of education they can seek. Furthermore, girls are often denied the right to choose their attire or travel unaccompanied. Each of these restrictions reflects a reality where gender inequality still reigns. This is a reminder of the continued struggle for true independence, particularly for marginalized groups.
Tales of Inequality and the Absence of Justice
Take, for instance, the recent case involving a doctor who was vehemently mistreated due to her gender. Certain individuals, under the guise of security and safety, perpetuate these injustices. The legal and justice systems often fail in their duties, especially when accused parties have connections with political parties. This raises a fundamental question: Why should women feel a sense of independence when their rights and safety are consistently violated? The very notion of an independent life is hollow when one cannot walk the streets freely or feel safe in their workplace.
The Contrast: Patience in an Era of Multitasking
While the struggle for independence is ongoing, it is also a time to reflect on another aspect of our lives: patience. Recently, I caught a glimpse of this virtue while riding the metro. An elderly man, despite being alert and energetic, took the time to fold his newspaper, place it on his lap, and carefully check the caller before answering the phone. In contrast, younger individuals might have dismissed this ritual or ignored the call altogether. This small observation highlights how the value of patience is diminishing in our fast-paced world.
Our current society is marked by a relentless pursuit of speed and efficiency. Eating without proper chewing has become the norm, and even meditation is seen as a task to be finished quickly. Friends often ask how to meditate for just a couple of minutes, emphasizing the need for instant gratification. While speed and efficiency have their place, neglecting the value of patience can lead to a superficial understanding and appreciation of life.
To embrace the true spirit of independence, we must also cherish patience. This means taking the time to truly experience life rather than rushing through it. It involves being mindful of our actions and gestures, ensuring that we live fully and understand the impact of our choices on ourselves and others. Patience is not merely a virtue but a fundamental aspect of finding and maintaining true independence.
So, as we celebrate 78 years of freedom, let us also strive to rediscover the patience that is essential to the quality of our lives. In honoring our independence, we must also embrace a slower, more considered approach to living. Each small act of patience, from the way we treat others to the mindful moments we take for ourselves, brings us closer to a truly independent and fulfilling existence.
Thank you for taking the time to reflect on these pressing issues. I wish you a day as amazing as you are, filled with mindful moments and a deep appreciation for the journey ahead.
