Science, Medicine, and the Human Desire for Eternity
Science, Medicine, and the Human Desire for Eternity
The goals of science, medicine, and doctors differ significantly from those held by Nazi Germany. While the former strive to alleviate human suffering, increase longevity, and foster health, the latter envisioned mass imprisonment and death camps. Contrary to popular belief, normal humanity shares a deeper desire to stop death rather than merely prolonging life indefinitely.
The Pursuit of Eternal Life
There exists a substantial industry dedicated to extending human life, with the ultimate goal of achieving immortality. This pervasive aspiration to live forever seems deeply ingrained in human nature. However, the sanctity of mortality cannot be ignored.
Mortality is a fundamental component of the cycle of life. As cherry blossoms bloom and wither away, so does every form of life. To make room for future generations, current ones must give way. This cycle ensures that new life can flourish, built upon the remains of the old.
The Desire for Immortality
The quest for immortality is a complex and perhaps misguided pursuit. While many aspire to eternal life, even in heaven, the idea of unending existence can become tormenting. Eternity requires no change, no evolution, and no progression—merely eternal repetition of the same self. This reality, paralleled by infinity, can transform a concept into an instrument of torment. I am grateful for the time I have been given and do not desire to lock myself into a perpetual present.
Science and medicine serve a noble purpose by reducing human suffering, preventing illnesses, combating diseases, and improving overall health. They offer quality of time and potentially more time, but not the infinite version coveted by many. Our focus should be on making the most of the time we have, rather than striving for artificial immortality.
Science and the Pursuit of Knowledge
Science and its related field, medicine, excel in delivering objective data that can be replicated and tested. This approach allows us to validate findings and further our understanding of the world, thereby enhancing human knowledge. By doing so, these disciplines contribute to the advancement of society and well-being.
The Role of Medicine in Society
Medicine plays a crucial role in society by alleviating suffering, preventing illness, combating diseases, and improving health. While these goals are noble, we must also be mindful of the ideology of transcending death. Medicine can extend life and enhance quality of time, but aspiring to an endless existence on Earth can become a burden. We are part of a continuous chain of life, and our place should be as contributors rather than the pinnacle of evolution.
Our ability to understand and adapt to the impermanence of life could lead to a more fulfilling existence. Rather than focusing solely on living indefinitely, we should embrace the beauty and reality of the finite time we have, making the most of every moment.
