Additionally, I do various ball drills a couple of days a week after work, which provides excellent cardio exercise in a more enjoyable format than using a treadmill. I can usually get 60 zone minutes from these drills.

Many of them have been playing their entire lives and maintaining decent fitness, others played when they were younger but stopped playing regularly, and some have picked it up as adults. The vast majority are happy just to get out there and play. There's a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, and most are eager to pass the ball, even if you're not very skilled.

Safety: Playing soccer at 40 can be relatively safe, though injuries can occur. Our over 30 league has three levels, with none of them allowing slide tackling. Most teams play more aggressively in the top level, but referees strive to keep the lower levels fun. For pickup games, always seek groups that explicitly state they are just for fun.
