My exploration in the realm of meditation has been a journey of discovery and personal growth. I have tried a myriad of techniques including Transcendental Meditation (TM) and Chakra Meditation, among others. But the question that consistently pops up is, what makes one stick to a certain practice? Is it the immediate satisfaction or the long-term benefits? Let’s delve into my experiences and the insights I have gained.

Exploring Diverse Techniques

Beyond just TM, I have delved into Deity Yoga, Mahamudra, Dzogchen, Western Occultism, and even American Indian shamanic practices. These various techniques have each offered unique insights and benefits, but one aspect that consistently puzzled me was the concept of mindfulness. Is it merely a brand name for something deeper?

Understanding "Sticking" to a Practice

The concept of sticking to a practice often takes on a spiritual significance in Buddhism. It is not merely about commitment but about testing and discernment. When you embark on a new path, you bring along the lens of your previous experiences. The juxtaposition of two ideas can spark a new realization, much like how two stones can create a flame. Hence, it is wise to intrepidly try new practices with an open mind and heart.

Vipassana and Heartfulness: A Contrast in Enrichment

Before diving into Heartfulness, I underwent a Vipassana 10-day course. This experience was profound, akin to a deep surgical operation on the subconscious mind, cleansing it of impurities. However, this did not negate the need for a different perspective. Heartfulness, on the other hand, offered a different kind of enrichment. You charged without the involvement of the mind, focusing purely on the heart. The progress was almost like a rocket boost. Nevertheless, it is essential to give both practices a fair trial for at least three months to truly gauge their effectiveness.

Personal Preference and Insights

I then tested both TM and Mindfulness meditation. While I found TM to be my preferred practice, the reasons were multifaceted. TM’s use of a mantra helps to anchor the mind, allowing one to achieve profound relaxation. The mantra serves as a distraction from passive thoughts, making the meditation more accessible for those who might find mindfulness challenging.

Conclusion

Meditation is a path of self-discovery, and what works for one may not work for another. It is crucial to explore various techniques, test them, and eventually choose what resonates most with you. Remember, the key is not just to stick to a practice but to truly immerse yourself in it, giving it the time and attention it deserves.
