A Personal Journey with Hospice Care

My brother, Donnie, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) shortly before his 40th birthday. Given a prognosis of 6 months, he managed to live for 27 months. Throughout his journey, Donnie was a triathlete, coach, fitness instructor, a special education teacher, a father, a brother, a husband, and a mentor to many.

During Christmas, the week before I was set to visit with the family, I received a call that his respiration was low. I needed to get there immediately. Upon arrival, the situation was dire, but it was determined that a new medication was the culprit and he was beginning to show signs of improvement.

Over the next week, I had the precious opportunity to be with him. One evening, the entire hospice team was gathered around his bed, including the hospice nurse, respiratory therapist, and Brad (Donnie's right hand man) and his wife T. In the midst of the discussion about the next steps, Donnie asked the profound question: "Am I dying?"

His eyes held a glint of determination, and the look in them made it clear that he wasn't prepared to go without one last spin class. This scenario is a testament to the impact of hospice care in providing comfort and dignity during the final stages of life.

Donnie, even in his chair, still managed to participate in the 5 AM spin class at Franco's Athletic Club. He had painstakingly recorded all commands on an electronic device in case he lost the ability to speak. His courage and determination are a stark reminder of the resilience of the human spirit.

Conclusion: Home hospice care is more than just medical treatment; it is about providing comprehensive support and comfort to terminally ill individuals and their families. Whether through medical care, emotional support, or personal care assistance, home hospice care ensures that the final days are filled with dignity and meaning.
