The First Day of BAMS: A Journey of Expectations and Reality

After being admitted to AIIMS Patna, a moment of great anticipation awaits for the medical community in the form of the arrival of their first day at BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery). This article delves into the expectations and reality of the first day of BAMS, a day that marks the beginning of a new chapter in their medical education journey.

From NEET to BAMS: The College Life Awakes

The journey leading up to the first day of BAMS was a whirlwind of emotions. With the admission and hostel allocation done on August 13, 2019, the excitement and impatience were palpable. After a few days, the notice arrived, specifying that the classes would commence from September 2, 2019, with an orientation program. This gap of almost 15 days was spent eagerly awaiting the start of the academic year. Meanwhile, the author connected with batchmates on Quora, sharing the same anticipation.

A Special Orientation Day

The first day began on September 1, 2019, with the author traveling to Patna. The night was further characterized by their father and uncle returning to the hometown to make necessary arrangements in the hostel. The next morning, September 2, 2019, dawned as a festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. The college had chosen a very auspicious day for the start of classes, filled with ritualistic significance. The author woke up early, around 4:30 am, and headed to the college building, arriving at the lecture theatre by 9:45 am. The venue was beautifully decorated with flowers, setting the stage for the day's activities.

Programme Highlights

The day's events kicked off with speeches from the Director and Dean, followed by a slideshow about the college. Lunch was provided with delicious snacks, and the exploration of the college's facilities continued. The afternoon session included instructions on hostel rules, anti-ragging policies, and library usage. The day concluded with a batch photograph with the faculties, capturing the shared enthusiasm and joy in a scorching heat.

The Photograph and Official Welcome

By the end of the day, the author reflected on the day, noting that while it was not as exciting as expected, the coming week held promises of new experiences. Excursions to various departments, including OPD, IPD, and the Gol Ghar and Bihar Museum, filled the days that followed. On September 5, a teacher’s day program organized by seniors celebrated the educators, who were honored with a dance and celebration. The climax of the week was a trip to Nalanda University and Pawapuri Jal Mandir, a traditional blend of education and culture.

The Class Begins

With the week of activities coming to an end, the professorials classes commenced officially on September 9, 2019. Many students had already acquired their lab coats, and the academic journey began with a classic photo with an apron and stethoscope, marking the start of anatomy classes. Despite initial impressions, students soon realized that the expectations of the medical school life did not diminish in the following months.

Summing Up

Reflecting on the first day of BAMS, many medical students observed a pattern of early waking, early breakfast, and a rush for front seats. There was a shared eagerness for dissection and a desire to grasp every detail from lectures. However, it is important to note that these traits were temporary and faded away as the course progressed. For those who are venturing into the world of medicine, the experience of BAMS provides a nuanced understanding of what to expect in the early days of medical school.
