Chickens, despite being domesticated and often kept in residential settings, possess the ability to fly, albeit not as extended as more aerodynamic birds. Understanding how far and how high chickens can fly is crucial for backyard chicken owners, collectors, and enthusiasts alike. However, there have been recorded instances where chickens can fly longer distances, with one modern chicken achieving a 13-second flight of just over three hundred feet.

Some backyard hens, especially meat breeds like Rhode Island Reds, are not capable of flying high but excel in covering longer distances at lower heights. On the other hand, egg-laying breeds like white Leghorns can easily fly over an eight-foot-high fence when threatened by predators.

One such example is a 100-foot-long garden row where my Black Sex Link hens have been observed flying lengths of 6 to 8 feet high without any problem. These chickens are not only capable of flying but also excellent foragers, often hopping from perch to perch to gain altitude and then traveling by what appears to be a combination of falling and flapping, which resembles true flight.

Exceptional Flight Event

However, there are rare instances when the flight capabilities of chickens truly astonish. A notable event was witnessed by a group of skydivers who decided to experiment with a chicken. They jumped out of an airplane with a borrowed chicken and let it “fly” on its own. The chicken, when released, tacked itself into a position and fell at terminal velocity, much like the skydivers themselves, until approximately a dozen meters above the ground. At this point, the chicken flapped its wings and executed a perfect landing, which appeared as graceful as that of the skydivers. After this remarkable feat, the chicken was seen pecking seeds on the ground as if nothing had happened and was then returned to its coop.
