We addressed this issue by providing them with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) unit, which seemed to resolve the problem temporarily. Frustration mounted when we eventually requested their cooperation to remotely diagnose the issue. They agreed, but we had a surprise waiting for us when they arrived at the server location. Instead of unplugging the server from the wall, which is what a regular shutdown would require, the cleaner, who was unfamiliar with the new UPS, unplugged the server from the UPS to plug in her vacuum cleaner. It was a stroke of genius—simple yet effective—solving the problem with an extension cord labeled “For Vacuum Cleaner Only.”
