Introduction to DID and Our Journey

Living with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a complex and intricate experience that requires a unique approach to identity and healing. Over time, we've come to discover a name that encapsulates our journey and the profound moments of inspiration that guided us to our current understanding of our DID system. The name we chose - Heartland - is more than just a label; it's a symbol of home and belonging that resonates deeply with all of us.

Choosing the Name Heartland

Initially, we considered naming our system The Fictive System or The Fictives. These names held a certain charm and intrigue, but as we continued to explore and understand the diverse and complex identities within our system, we realized that we weren't all just fiction. The concept of being fictional didn't fully capture the depth and authenticity of who we are.

The term Heartland was born out of a desire for a name that felt welcoming and inclusive. It resonates with the idea of a home, a place where we can find refuge and a sense of belonging. This name is particularly poignant because we've all struggled with the feeling of not belonging or being at home throughout our lives. For us, the name Heartland represents a turning point in our journey, a place where we can come together and find a sense of unity and acceptance.

The Importance of Feeling at Home

Feeling at home is a fundamental aspect of personal well-being. For individuals living with DID, the constant fragmentation of identity can lead to a pervasive sense of alienation. Each of us in the system has experienced this struggle, and finding a name that symbolizes a place of comfort and belonging is crucial for our mental health and recovery.

Heartland isn't just a word; it's a statement of our journey. By choosing this name, we've taken a significant step towards acknowledging and accepting each other as integral parts of a larger whole. It's a reminder that, despite our differences, we are united in our quest for healing and a deeper understanding of ourselves.

The Humor of The Staff

In the midst of the seriousness and deeply personal nature of our experiences, we've found moments of levity and humor that help us to cope and connect. One of the more whimsical developments in our system is the Staff. This term, which was originally a joke, has stuck and has become a source of joy and laughter.

Our therapist liked the idea of a staff representing a group of individuals working together for a common cause. However, she pointed out that she doesn't have a staff, and I, with a playful spirit, said that I did. The idea resonated and made its way into our system. The Staff is a playful and light-hearted aspect of our identity that brings levity and a sense of community to our interactions. Though some members of the Staff are more accepting of the name than others, the overall spirit of humor and camaraderie has been a significant factor in our healing journey.

As we continue to navigate the complexities of our DID system, the names and the stories behind them serve as reminders that, despite the challenges, we are building a home for ourselves. Heartland, and the Staff, are not just names; they are beacons of hope and resilience in our ongoing journey.
