Many of us fret over catching a cold or flu, especially with the ever-present threat of viruses like COVID-19. While it’s natural to want to stay healthy and avoid illness, the journey to achieving that goal often comes with misconceptions about hygiene and cleanliness. In this article, we explore the right balance of hygiene and healthy habits to keep yourself strong and disease-free.

Hygiene and Cleanliness: Finding the Right Balance

A common misconception is that washing your hands all the time, or using sanitizers frequently, is the ultimate way to prevent illness. However, this overzealous approach can be detrimental to your health. Let’s start by breaking down the essentials:

Washing Hands: Wash your hands after using the bathroom, before preparing food, after touching raw meat, before eating, and after touching something gross—like a dirty Kleenex or mud. However, you don’t need to wash your hands every time you touch a doorknob, shopping cart handle, money, or an ATM. Similarly, sanitize kitchen sinks and counters after they've been exposed to raw meat, and regularly clean the bathroom. Frequent sanitization of every surface can actually strip your skin of its natural protective barrier and lead to increased vulnerability to infection. Immune System Development: Our bodies develop a healthy immune system through exposure to small amounts of dirt and germs. Overly cleaning and sanitizing ourselves and our homes isn’t ideal, as it limits our exposure to normal microbes. Research shows that children who grow up in homes with pets tend to develop better immunity than those without, due to the increased exposure to various germs at a young age.

Healthy Habits: Diet, Exercise, and Immunity

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key to preventing illness. Here are some strategies to boost your immune system and overall health:

Healthy Diet: Consuming nutritious foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can enhance your immune function. Vitamins C and zinc, in particular, are crucial. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Hydration is also essential; aim to drink plenty of water to keep your kidneys clean and to maintain regular bowel movements. Regular Exercise: Physical activity strengthens your immune system and reduces stress. Engage in aerobic exercises like swimming, mace and club training, or weightlifting. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week. Vaccinations and Supplements: Stay up-to-date with your vaccinations and consider supplements to fill any nutritional gaps. Talk to your healthcare provider about the vaccines that are right for you.

The Power of Sleep and Down Time

Lastly, don’t neglect the importance of sleep. A sufficient amount of sleep is crucial for your body to recuperate and repair. Many people could benefit from more sleep. Ensure you have a consistent sleep schedule and create a relaxing bedtime routine.

Remember, it’s not about being perfect. Even seasoned individuals like me, who are 68 and haven’t been sick for many years, can’t avoid everything. But steadily reducing your risk by adopting these healthy habits is certainly achievable.
