The Most Heart-wrenching Cases of Mental Health and My Journey to Healing

As a former Christian priest, witnessing the suffering of others has been a profound part of my life's work. However, the most heart-wrenching cases of mental health that I've encountered involve mature individuals with autism or ALS, and my personal experiences with borderline personality disorder.

Mature Individuals with Autism or ALS

In my opinion, the saddest cases of mental health are mature individuals with autism or those suffering from ALS. While their minds remain functional, their bodies are restricted, leading to a waste of potential and life. This condition is indeed a tragic scenario. The sheer potential lost in individuals who are cognitively intact yet physically limited serves as a stark reminder of humanity's vulnerability and the importance of early intervention and support.

The Saddest Experience: My Father’s Tragic End

The day my father took his own life

I still remember the day when I found out my father had taken a self-inflicted gun shot to his head. This was not just a moment of shock but a profound impact on my life. Mental illness is a dark and difficult reality, and it shook the very foundation of my existence. I miss my father even after 40 years of separation. His loss haunts me, reminding me of the devastating toll that mental health issues can take on families and individuals.

The Struggle with Borderline Personality Disorder

The vicious cycle of self-hate and suffering

One of the most heartbreaking experiences I've had was dealing with borderline personality disorder (BPD). I struggled to accept who I was, leading me to self-harm, often as a desperate attempt to feel cared for. The core of the issue was the feeling of depending on the actions and words of others to validate my self-worth. This led to a significant realization after 16 years of suffering: loving oneself is essential before one can truly love others. Once self-love is achieved, the only way to feel genuinely cared for and loved is by caring and loving others.

The physical toll of my struggles

To make matters worse, my self-hatred led to repeated overdoses and hospitalizations. I suffered from liver damage and even fell into a coma due to deep cuts on my skin. These scars, both physical and emotional, are a constant reminder of the destructive path I took out of self-hate. The realization that I could have turned my hate into love much earlier and improved my quality of life more deeply is a tough pill to swallow. It's hard to imagine how much better my life could have been if I had sought help much sooner.

The Path to Healing

Despite the heartache and countless moments of self-doubt, I'm grateful to finally be getting the help I need. Overcoming these challenges has taken immense effort and time, but it's essential to keep moving forward. Life is too short to dwell on the past. It's crucial to take it one day at a time and continually strive to be a better person.

In conclusion, while the experiences I've shared are deeply sad, it's vital to remember that there is always hope. Seeking help and making positive changes in our lives can lead to a brighter future. No matter how much we have suffered, we have the power to create a better tomorrow, one day at a time.
