Deceptive Appearances

My ex-partner, N, was a perfect example of someone who took fitness to extremes. Every set he did, he would stand in front of the mirror, going through the motions as if staring at his reflection could somehow enhance his physicality. However, despite his fitness-centric persona, his actual habits and lifestyle were far from exemplary. He lacked the basic skills of cooking and often indulged in eating out, completely neglecting the importance of a balanced diet.

It's worth noting that not everyone who is fixated on health and fitness is a narcissist. Some individuals have a genuine interest in maintaining physical well-being as part of their lifestyle. However, N's behavior quickly revealed the underlying issue. His true intentions became clear when he began questioning my activities and assuming that I simply worked out or ran to gain attention. For instance, he organized a trip to an amusement water park, where the entire itinerary was centered around allowing him to show off his physique. He would post updates about his progress in getting a six-pack on WhatsApp, a group meant for official office purposes, which was clearly a tactic to keep the attention focused on his body.

Strippers and Bodybuilders: A Misleading Parallel

Not all strippers and bodybuilders are narcissists, but it is true that some can exhibit narcissistic tendencies. In this category, there are women who use their bodies and sexuality to control their environment, just as there are men. My experience with N is a case study in how a narcissist might use health and fitness as a facade to attract attention and manipulate others.

Interestingly, N's six-pack abs were not well-maintained during our relationship. In college, he often took advantage of picnics where he could showcase his body to girls who admired it. At our workplace, where he was the boss, he tried to organize activities that would allow him to be the center of attention.
