The Pandemic's Impact on Our Thinking: A Personal Reflection

I like speculating, thinking, and imagining possibilities. It's a natural part of my personality, but the pandemic has taught me a valuable lesson: sometimes, it pays to be more self-critical and responsible in our thoughts and actions.

From Speculation to Rigorous Science

Back in May 2020, before the pandemic had truly taken hold, I was reading about the molecular biology of the newly-characterized SARS-CoV2. The idea of a widely-available antiparasitic drug being effective against the virus was very encouraging. I was also following early studies on Montelukast, a drug with potential antiviral properties. However, the pandemic was not a joke; it was a serious public health crisis.

As society began to descend into a cesspool of misinformation and conspiracy theories, I found myself moving in the opposite direction. The pandemic forced me to be more self-critical, more careful, and a better scientist. I realized the importance of rigorous and responsible science, especially when it comes to public health matters. The “Trump Effect” made me more conscious of the danger of self-deception, and I started to fear my own wishful thinking in the field of medicine.

A Lesson in Responsibility and Self-Reflection

This newfound awareness was an important lesson. The more we indulge in hope and speculation without rigorous testing and verification, the more vulnerable we become to misinformation and false assumptions. Moving beyond these ideas was a symbolic act for me – a recognition that I need to stay grounded and fact-based in my thinking.

Even when I contracted the virus, despite being fully vaccinated, there was no need for any form of self-treatment. This experience reinforced the importance of being immunized against misinformation and the need to avoid falling into the trap of wishful thinking during crises.

The Domino Effect of the Pandemic

The impact of the pandemic extends far beyond just the physical health of individuals. It has had a profound effect on our mental health and the way we think and perceive the world.

For many, the pandemic has brought about a sense of loss and anxiety. I, too, found myself losing the sparkle that I used to have before the pandemic. My anxiety worsened, and my thoughts became darker. However, I take comfort in the fact that the pandemic has sharpened my psychic powers, a blessing from the Gods, in a way.

Through this experience, I have learned to be more compassionate and understanding towards others who have gone through similar struggles. The wretched influence of the pandemic has had a domino effect on our lives, and it is important to move forward with a wiser and more grounded mindset.

So, while the pandemic has undoubtedly brought about significant challenges, it has also offered valuable lessons in responsibility, self-reflection, and the importance of rigorous scientific thought.

May we all move forward, wiser and more resilient, in the wake of this global challenge.
