The Role of Bedside Manner in Medical Care: An Unavoidable Expectation
Every patient has a set of expectations when it comes to medical care, but perhaps one of the most fundamental is the bedside manner of their healthcare provider. This article delves into the importance of a compassionate and patient-centered approach, especially in the context of surgeries and long-term treatments.
Introduction
When faced with a medical condition requiring surgery, the choice of a healthcare provider is crucial. Being upfront with patients about the potential risks and complications is essential. However, a lack of bedside manner can often overshadow these necessary medical truths. This article shares personal experiences and reflections on the significance of a good professional demeanor.
The Experience with Dr. Shortz: A Technical Marvel with No Compassion
One instance that remains etched in my memory occurred a few years ago. I was diagnosed with a slipped disc in the c5 and c6 cervical vertebrae, which led me to require a surgical procedure. Seeking a referral, I was referred to Dr. Shortz, a renowned neurosurgeon. However, the initial conversation with my primary care provider was less than reassuring.
My doctor mentioned, “Well that would be Doctor Shortz, but…” and trailed off, suggesting that he might be brusque. Upon further questioning, it became clear that while some patients found his directness off-putting, Dr. Shortz was considered one of the best in his field due to his technical expertise. Despite this, a matter-of-fact delivery of such grave consequences for my potential surgery was alarming.
Me: So what are the dangers involved in this surgery MD: Paralysis, blindness, and death. Me: Try not to do that. MD: OK
The surgery went perfectly, and my cervical spine is fully functional. However, the experience reminded me of the importance of a doctor’s bedside manner. Dr. Shortz, while technically proficient, was utterly absent in providing any form of psychological support or reassurance.
Harsh Words from Patients: A Call for Brutal Truths
Another recurring theme in my medical experiences is the honest communication that many patients want and need. In my current or past medical care, there are instances where I have felt the need to confront the healthcare provider for being too blunt. Such directness, while appreciated and necessary from a medical standpoint, is not always well-received by the patients. It often leads to accusations of lacking tact or poor bedside manner.
Many critics of honest medical advice point to the need for more gentle communication. However, the challenge lies in balancing the need for clarity with the patient's emotional state. From my perspective, a healthcare provider must deliver blunt truths while also showing empathy and understanding.
What Does a Good Doctor Look Like?
For an effective doctor, the expectation is to be honest, knowledgeable, and compassionate. While technical proficiency is crucial, the ability to communicate in a way that emphasizes care and concern is equally important. A good doctor should convey the necessary medical information without overwhelming the patient, and also offer reassurance and support.
What Does a Good Nurse Look Like?
In contrast, a good nurse should be a source of comfort and support. The duty of a nurse is to listen to the patient’s numerous complaints, hold their hand, and make them feel better overall. Nurses are often the patient’s first and last point of contact, and hence, they play a pivotal role in the patient’s emotional state during recovery.
The Balancing Act
The challenge lies in finding the right balance between honesty and tact. Providers must convey risks and realities without causing undue anxiety or distress. Listening to patients and addressing their concerns can go a long way in building trust and fostering a positive patient-provider relationship.
Ultimately, the goal should be to provide effective medical care while also ensuring that patients feel heard, understood, and supported. A well-rounded approach to patient care, encompassing both technical excellence and compassionate bedside manner, is essential for a truly comprehensive healthcare system.
