Both food and oxygen are essential for energy production. However, the difference in their necessity and availability is significant. An organism can survive for only a short period without air and can drastically survive for several days or even weeks without food. This stark contrast highlights the immediate and critical need for oxygen.

Energy Release Through Chemical Bonds

Chemically, the energy in food molecules like proteins and carbohydrates is much higher compared to the energy in oxygen molecules. When these molecules are broken down through metabolism, a significant amount of energy is released in the form of heat and chemical energy.

Biological Metabolism – A Metaphorical Fire

This process can be understood through a familiar example: a fire. Just like fire, our metabolism converts food (fuel) into carbon dioxide (CO2) and water, releasing energy. However, the fire needs oxygen to continue burning; without it, the fire extinguishes. Similarly, if an organism stops breathing, their metabolic fire goes out. Therefore, both fuel and oxygen are essential in the energy release process.
