The Subtle Signs of Hidden Illness: When Doctors Miss the Mark

Have you ever felt fine but the doctor said you were really sick What was going on? Sometimes, what our bodies tell us and what medical instruments reveal don't align. This article delves into real-life experiences where unnoticed or hidden illnesses elicited no apparent symptoms in the eyes of the doctor but manifested significantly to the patient.

Real-Life Stories of Hidden Illness

Encountering unexplained symptoms can be distressing, especially when they persist or worsen despite assurances from healthcare providers. Here are a few personal experiences of individuals who struggled with hidden illnesses that were initially overlooked.

A Toxic Habitat Triggers Environmental Illness

I had a regular appointment to keep track of some things. When I mentioned to the nurse that my heart had raced that morning for no apparent reason, they ran some tests and sent me to the hospital. To me, whatever happened seemed to be over, but apparently, things were still happening.

My ex-husband had moved us to Massachusetts, and we lived in a ratty 1970s era trailer situated in his parents' backyard. It had been put there years earlier as housing for elderly aunts and uncles with no place else to live. They had died, and we just received the Quitclaim to the farm so we moved. It was a pit. The carpeting was filthy, the particleboard was full of old crud, the heating was a forced hot air kerosene furnace, the roof leaked, and there was mold. It was a wreck. I already had environmental illness and being stuck in this dump made it exponentially worse.

I knew I was sick but my ex expected me to keep on keeping on, so that's what I did. He always expected us to ignore being sick because that's what HE did. Eventually, I figured out what the matter was, demanded we live in a better place, but years went by before that occurred.

A member of our co-op who had environmental illness recognized my symptoms and insisted I go see her doctor right away. That was a turning point. Environmental illness caused my hair to fall out, I got rings under my eyes, I got hives, my moods were out of whack, and I coughed constantly.

Postpartum Complications with Severed Anemia

Another significant experience was after the birth of my third child. He was a planned home birth and I was healthy, relatively, beforehand. There was labor dystocia, and a lot of drama. He got stuck. The midwife eased him out, but I had serious uterine atony (lack of contractions) post-birth and lost a quart of blood. It's a good thing I was big. I declined transport because I knew home-birth families are treated like criminals at hospitals, plus my ex-husband didn't want it. So, I received a bag of Ringer's Lactate by IV and was at home recovering for about a month.

The midwife was really concerned, so we did hire a doula and we limited visitors to the house, but again, the expectation was no lying around. Severe anemia makes your heart beat faster because it's trying to carry oxygen to your cells but there are fewer red blood cells to do the job. So, you get tired, and your heart rate is elevated. Regardless, I was up and doing.

For years, I had undiagnosed cough variant asthma. I kept on doing. No inhalers, nothing but bags of mints because my ex didn't want me making Dr. bills by getting treated. Noticing a trend, in our house, you deal and deal.

Divorce and Dental Abscess

During the divorce, there was a molar which had the crown come loose, and I had to delay getting it dealt with because someone canceled my fuckin health insurance, and the dentist refused me as a self-pay. That abscessed molar had a draining fistula for two years. I kept on keeping on because at that point, I seriously had to. It was like being a prey animal on the Serengetti. Any show of weakness on my part would have made my ex-escalate his hostility. I am sure I was massively sick. Could not be so, I ignored it.

When I moved to Maine, finally, I got it yanked. Half the $300 bill from the dentist got canceled out because that tooth flew out of my head under pressure. I had never taken note.

If there's one thing about dysphoria, it teaches you bodily discomforts can be compartmentalized. It's like SEALs training for the disenfranchised.

Conclusion

These personal stories demonstrate that hidden illnesses can present themselves through subtle, unexplained symptoms that traditional medical practices may miss. It is important for patients to advocate for themselves and consider alternative sources of care when initial diagnoses do not align with their symptoms.
