Therapy is not just a luxury, but a necessity for many seeking personal growth and healing. Over the years, my therapist has provided countless pieces of advice that have profoundly impacted my life. Among these, a few stand out as truly transformative—such as the simple yet powerful advice to lie to someone who is crazy and possibly dangerous.

'It is perfectly ok to lie to someone who is crazy and possibly dangerous.' This statement, once uttered, seemed like common sense. However, growing up with the belief that one should either tell the truth or say nothing at all, it took me until I was in my mid-40s to fully understand the wisdom in this advice.

I had been through a tumultuous period with an ex-spouse who was threatening, stalking, and endangering myself and my loved ones. With no clear guidance on how to navigate these dangerous situations, I often felt powerless. However, once given permission to tell lies in order to de-escalate these tense situations, I found myself more capable of protecting myself and others. In the context of emotional abuse, this advice has the potential to be a lifeline.

My therapist also emphasized the importance of mindfulness daily. Mindfulness is a powerful tool for managing stress and staying present. The practice involves paying full attention to the present moment without judgment, and it can significantly enhance one's emotional well-being.

Forgiveness Emotional Healing

One of the most profound pieces of advice came when my therapist asked, 'If what you did was done by someone else, would they be worthy of forgiveness?' When I replied affirmatively, she responded, 'Then why are you not?' This question struck a chord within me, highlighting the importance of self-forgiveness in the healing process.

I have been in therapy for quite some time now, and the process has been both expensive (around 2950 INR per session) and enlightening. One of the most impactful pieces of advice, however, is the idea that emotions exist for a reason. Often, we try to run away from our emotions, but they are a natural part of the human experience. Emotions should be acknowledged and sometimes embraced, much like long-lost relatives. By doing so, we can begin to heal and grow.

Emotional Resilience in Adversity

Sometimes, we find ourselves in difficult circumstances due to our own choices or past traumas. But this does not negate the fact that seeking help and emotional resilience are crucial. Coordinated sexual assault by multiple perpetrators is still classified as rape, and the aftermath of such experiences often leaves individuals grappling with overwhelming emotions and trauma.

In the face of such adversity, it is essential to seek support and practice self-care. Therapy and the guidance of a therapist can provide the necessary tools to navigate emotional turmoil and build resilience.
