This condition can have severe repercussions, including impaired cognitive function, reduced physical performance, and even death in extreme cases.

Only later did I realize the extent and seriousness of anemia, which can indeed lead to death in severe cases.

In a life-threatening scenario, an individual may face 'demand ischemia,' defined as the body's inability to supply enough oxygen to the heart. Oxygen is critical for a process called oxidative phosphorylation, which converts food energy into ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the form of energy necessary for bodily functions. Without sufficient oxygen, this process becomes inefficient, leading to limited ATP production.
In the absence of adequate oxygen, the body can produce energy from glucose and some amino acids, but cannot utilize fat, which must be converted into glucose. This process, known as glycolysis, results in the accumulation of lactic acid. An accumulation of lactic acid can be toxic and may lead to survival difficulties unless the body possesses an inherent mechanism to compensate. Certain microorganisms, such as facultative and obligate anaerobes, can survive without oxygen, but this is due to their unique metabolic pathways.
