Turning Asperger’s into a Gift: Perspective and Personal Success

Turning a difficulty into a blessing isn’t a realistic goal for everyone. Instead, it's a perspective, a way of finding situations that benefit from your unique behavior and avoiding those that don't. Most people do this to some degree, regardless of whether they have a disability or not.

For me, it took years of personal growth and self-awareness to realize that the difficulties I faced were unique to me. It wasn't just about surviving; it was about seizing opportunities where my abilities could be an asset.

Asperger's can indeed be a blessing, particularly in specialized fields where extraordinary abilities are highly valued. Many individuals with Asperger's possess extraordinary skills that can greatly benefit society. However, it often takes time and the right circumstances for these abilities to be recognized and utilized.

Recognizing Abilities and Utilizing Them

I have Asperger’s and, like many, I initially saw it as a challenge. But over time, I’ve learned to take ownership of the issues I face, especially with depression and anxiety. This perspective has helped me succeed in various areas of life, including work, relationships, and personal pursuits.

Asperger's is not a deficit; it's a different pattern of brain wiring that can lead to remarkable aptitudes. For instance, I have a nearly photographic memory and am exceptionally skilled at problem-solving. While my social skills can sometimes be a challenge, they haven't prevented me from forming great friendships and running a successful business.

The Road to Success

The journey to finding a fulfilling career path with Asperger's is often fraught with obstacles. It took me years to recognize my abilities and find a vocation that would utilize them effectively. My experiences highlight the importance of perseverance and willingness to take risks.

My path began in seminary, where I was told my disability was a liability and that I should pursue a different vocation. This led to an eleven-year period of struggle and isolation. However, my husband, who is now with the Lord, suggested I consider a career in computer work. I enrolled in a computer science program, where my knowledge and trivia proved invaluable.

|Personal Anecdote|

In one particularly memorable class, I created a Flash animation project in my late teens. Decades later, when I was studying at a community college, the professor reviewed a PowerPoint presentation I created with media and commented, “You are way more advanced. You present last so your classmates won’t feel awkward.” This recognition was a turning point, proving that my abilities had real value.

Success in Unexpected Fields

My affinity for horse racing also played a significant role in my success. As a young girl, my interest in horse racing helped me land a job at a local off-track betting facility. My dedication, analytical skills, and knowledge of past racing performances caught the attention of my superiors, which led to my promotion.

Today, I am working behind the scenes of the pari-mutuel system for horse racing in North America, ensuring bettors in America and Canada can wager at racetracks and gaming facilities. My workload will soon be structured in a way that maximizes my abilities. I am also a volunteer at the Kentucky Derby Museum, where I assist in office work and other duties.

|Experience with Autism|

During a job interview, I emphasized my attention to detail, focus, and passion for horse racing and its culture, specifically highlighting my autism. This openness and willingness to adapt have been key to my success. If you have nothing to lose, take a chance and embrace your unique abilities.

The key to turning Asperger's into a gift is finding the right platform and being willing to take risks. With the right perspective and willingness to adapt, you can leverage your strengths and find a fulfilling path.
