Understanding and Embracing Differences: A Social Perspective on Friendship and Disability

Friendship is a universal bond that connects individuals across all walks of life. Yet, when it comes to friendships with individuals who have disabilities, it is often misunderstood or even unnoticed. Through my personal experiences, I have come to understand that true friendship transcends limitations and enhances not only our lives but also the qualities within us.

Friendly Conversations with Those with Disabilities

Many of my friends have disabilities, and our conversations are as varied as any other. We discuss our lives, what we have planned for the day, our favorite cuisines, and even the latest TV shows. It is all about being present in each other's lives, and this presence is mutual. My friends bring out the best in me and enrich my experiences.

My friendships with individuals with disabilities encompass a wide range of conditions, from visual impairments to physical disabilities, hearing impairments, and beyond. One such congregation I am part of comprises a group of deaf people, and our conversations are primarily in sign language. These exchanges feel just as natural and genuine as any spoken conversation. What matters is the heart behind the interaction.

Humanity, Civility, and Respect

So, how do friends who have disabilities align with the traits of a humane, civil, and respectable person? The answer is unequivocally “Yes.” In every aspect, they live up to these values. We all strive for a world where disabilities are no longer a distinguishing factor, as true for all individuals under the realm of God's kingdom.

Revelation 21:4 mentions a future where there will be no disabilities: “And he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.’” This passage highlights the hope and aspiration for a world where all are free from suffering and limitations.

Resilience and Appreciation in Adversity

Despite living with various disabilities, including conditions like hyperpituitarism, epilepsy, and others, I have come to view my experiences as a gift rather than a curse. Many wonder about the implications of having health and learning disabilities. My response is simple: I feel fine, and I act and look normal like everyone else. However, I have also realized that a life without challenges would be unimaginably boring. Embracing difficulty has taught me valuable lessons and made me appreciate what I have more.

“For people's lives are easy. I know you are having fun right now. But when you get older, it will be boring, and people's lives which are hard will not be bored and feel like they have learned much.” - Tayton Smith (me)

This quote encapsulates the essence of my belief: that challenges and trials make life enriching and fulfilling. They force us to learn, grow, and appreciate the moments of joy in a world that is both complex and beautiful.

Conclusion

Friendship, particularly with those who have disabilities, teaches us valuable lessons about empathy, acceptance, and resilience. It serves as a reminder that true humanity and civility shine through in the simple act of being present, listening, and understanding. As we strive for a more inclusive world, let us remember that each person, regardless of their abilities, brings unique perspectives and strengths to our lives.
