Unveiling the Hazards of Shopping Addiction: A Personal Journey

Shopping addiction is a real issue that has robbed many of us of our financial peace of mind and has negatively impacted our lives in more ways than one. My personal journey with online shopping addiction began in 2014, a treacherous time marred by the aftermath of failed relationships and friendships, compounded by plummeting self-esteem. In my attempt to reinvent myself, I stumbled upon the world of online shopping, and it didn't take long for me to become utterly enchanted.

The Birth of an Obsession

Distressed and in need of comfort, I found solace in Cool Casual, a platform that offered designer casual wear at breathtakingly low prices. It started innocently enough, perhaps under 500, but soon spiraled into the allure of 'get 3 for 999' and then 'buy for 4999 and get gift vouchers free'. My addiction began subtly, but it quickly escalated.

The Revelation

It wasn't until much later that I realized how crazy this addiction had become. I was buried in lookbooks from every conceivable occasion, decorating my life with the aspirational dreams of always looking perfect. I've splurged lakhs of rupees on lehengas and countless other fancy outfits that I may never wear again. Influenced by top actresses and models, I've bought every piece of clothing that celebrities wear, forgetting my own financial and earning realities.

The Unresolved Battle

I've been grappling with this addiction for the past year. I've even emptied my accounts into savings, now left with just 1000 rupees, yet I continue to order, convinced that the money will mysteriously appear. This cycle is enabling me to ignore the fact that I am inconveniencing poor delivery men who drive miles to deliver my orders. It's a vicious cycle that is both financially and emotionally draining.

A Plea to the Youth

Youngsters, particularly girls, often fall into the trap set by online shopping websites and social media influencers. The relentless cycle of hauls and endless designs can be overwhelming. We do not need to look like movie stars in every frame we are in, influenced by the unrealistic lifestyles of celebrities. It's perfectly okay to not look fashionable or to not put on high-end makeup.

Focus on what truly matters: good food, great books, financial stability, and healthcare. Clothes are the least of your priorities as they offer no return on investment. It's delightful to be fashionable, but not at the cost of personal financial ruin.

Self-Reflection and Mindfulness

Before making any purchase, pose yourself these critical questions:

Do I need this? Can I do without this?

These questions are essential for ensuring that your purchases reflect your true needs and values, not just impulsive desires or the relentless pull of advertisements and social media.

Invest in your happiness, but let it not be a misleading path to a nightmare. Resist the temptations and focus on things that truly matter to you. Remember, saving money from the very first day you start earning is the only thing you'll be genuinely grateful for.

That's the only thing I can preach: resist temptations with the thought of investing in your own happiness and wellbeing, things that truly matter to you, over and above the allure of endless shopping opportunities.
