When Does Spirituality Triumph Over Technology?
When Does Spirituality Triumph Over Technology?
Technology is a tool to accomplish tasks, and it is not in opposition to spirituality. When the tasks we undertake are spiritual in nature, the technology itself can become 'spiritualized.' Broadly speaking, spiritual activities fall into three categories: those done exclusively for the Lord, those done for the Lord for our own benefit, and those done for the Lord to benefit others. In all these areas, technology has proven invaluable, especially during times of lockdowns and restrictions.
The Role of Technology in Spiritual Activities
The internet provides us with access to a plethora of spiritual resources, such as classes, temples, darshan, seminars, discussions, kirtans, and more. Technology allows us to 'prapti siddhi,' bringing things from distant places and making spiritual resources more accessible. We can easily purchase books on spiritual topics and ask questions to knowledgeable individuals, some of whom may be on the other side of the world. Furthermore, technology has made travel more convenient and efficient, giving us more time in the day for spiritual activities. Additionally, printed books make spiritual texts more affordable and accessible.
Spirituality and Detachment
Another aspect where spirituality triumphs over technology is in our ability to detach ourselves from material attachments. Technological dependence can certainly lead to disturbance, but spirituality offers us the opportunity to detach from material possessions and find self sufficiency. By embracing this detachment, we can find inner peace and happiness. Spirituality also helps us unwind our karmic bonds and offers a path to a better life. Ultimately, it can help us break free from the cycle of rebirth.
The Reconstruction of the Soul
Furthermore, spirituality can reconstruct the soul, much like a masterful craftsman would repair a broken dish. While technology and science can never fully comprehend the soul, as they lack the comprehensive understanding it possesses, spirituality can mend the fractured parts of the soul, restoring its wholeness.
The Turning Point of Vishada
There comes a time when spirituality conquers technology, and that time is during moments of severe distress or trauma. The experience of loss or severe bodily damage during an accident can serve as a catalyst for spiritual awakening. This phase of grief and devastation, known as vishada, often leads to detachment and introspection, laying the groundwork for spiritual growth. The roots of spirituality, such as beragya, bhakti, and gnana, are essentially the turning points where technology and spirituality intersect and transform into a higher form of spiritual awareness.
Finding Deeper Knowledge
Ultimately, true knowledge lies in the realms of spirituality. While technical knowledge can be superficial and limited, the deepest forms of understanding and wisdom that lead to true spiritual growth come from a more profound and philosophical understanding of life and the universe. In these moments of vishada, technology may offer temporary solace, but it is spirituality that provides the enduring path to peace and understanding.
