Why Did I Start Practicing Mindfulness?

As someone who has extensively read the works of Osho and listened to his talks, it's safe to say that he is one of the most prominent figures in the world when it comes to emphasizing the importance of mindfulness. In an audio leak in 1978, someone asked Osho, “What prompted you to begin practicing mindfulness?” His response was insightful and profound, and it resonates with my personal journey as well.

Primarily Being Born

Osho's Response: 'Primarily being born. But there's speculation that the nature of eternity/eternal life exists independently of the status of being either incarnate, pre-carnate, or post-carnate.'

My Experience: I fully agree with Osho's response. Life, in its essence, is a journey of constant growth and exploration. Being born into such a constant state of change naturally leads one to seek deeper understandings of self and reality. My journey into mindfulness was a gradual realization of life's truths.

Life Pressures and the Value of Mindfulness

In life, we all face pressures that force us to adapt and find our center. The negative consequences of being absent-minded can include missed opportunities and unnecessary stress. Conversely, being mindful can bring about numerous positive effects, from better decision-making to a more purposeful and peaceful life.

The Influence of Buddhism

Mindfulness is a positive status of mind. We all possess this trait to some extent, but many of us don't fully exploit its potential. During my readings and experiences, I was heavily influenced by the Buddhist teachings on mindfulness. These teachings encouraged me to live more in the present and to let go of past regrets and future anxieties.

Mindfulness in Daily Life

When you have multiple responsibilities and live in an uncertain world, being mindful becomes incredibly important. It helps you live more purposefully and with ease. If you are a student, practicing mindfulness can significantly enhance your performance. And if you are in a situation where critical decisions need to be made, being fully aware of your actions is essential for better judgment.

Critical Situations and Mindfulness

The most critical moments can sometimes test our limits, but being mindful can significantly improve our ability to handle them. For instance, in a potentially terrifying situation like getting caught in a tsunami, being fully aware of each second can help you act without panic. I have personally navigated multiple situations where mindfulness played a crucial role, such as avoiding accidents and adverse situations.

The Power of Being Present

One of the most significant benefits of mindfulness is the ability to enjoy the present moment. Mindfulness enables you to appreciate the here and now. I can personally guarantee that being mindful can help you avoid half of your problems. When you are fully engaged in the present moment, you can experience a sense of peace and enjoyment that transcends the usual stresses of life.

Living in the Now

For me, mindfulness is not just a practice; it is a way of life. It’s about prioritizing the present moment and the actions you are currently taking. By living in the present, you can break free from the chains of inner turmoil and external pressures. This practice of being present is what I believe contributes to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
